Class Dublin Taxi Driver

One sunny summer day in Dublin, pub drinkers spill out onto the streets. Blocking traffic. And dancing. With taxi drivers. The taxi driver is part-time DJ Wayne Karney. His dance partner is Andrea Pappin, spokesperson for the Irish Presidency of the EU 2013.

To quote the two Irish men sitting at the table next to my wife and I when we were eating dinner, along with 200 other people in a crap hotel pub/cafeteria after our trans-atlantic flight was diverted back to Shannon, Ireland after getting partway across the ocean due to a cabin fire: "What's yer hurry?"

I thought this sort of thing only happened in Lunnon', with cheerful cockneys! She's smiling and her arms are moving! Way to break down the stereotypes!

But now where will we get our grim Irish step dancers?

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. As it should be done.

As covered in the Irish Independent. Andrea Pappin seems unusual for a fairly senior politician in hat the leading Google links relating to her are to her social media sites rather than to news articles talking about her work. Whether that says great things about her, lousy things about her work or poor things about the Irish media I don't know. I'll go with option 1.

Only a few days ago I realised that Keelan, who posted the vid, is my next door neighbour's son. Small world!

DJ Wayne Karney

I read that as DJ Wayne Carr, as in the GLR presenter famed for his interviews with top pop stars like 2 Unlimited and Sonia.

This type of thing should happen more often, everywhere.

This proves once again that it's not about what you've got (not saying that either of them have it or don't have it) but it's how you can move it.

That was lovely as all get out.

"Get Lucky" is everywhere this summer. Last night at Dodger Stadium, they had it playing during pregame, and it put a smile on my face -- as it does when I hear it at random seemingly every day someplace. Or when I listen to the whole album again, which I'm about to do. Great song, and the perfect video for it to be in.

Just a modern take on "Stop and smell the roses."

Good for them! There's no place you need to go in such a hurry that you can't stop and dance for a couple of minutes.

Sorry, the DJ Wayne Karney link is fixed (thanks mods!)

I agree that this is lovely and should happen more often everywhere. It made me really happy in a really stupid way. I am all for spontaneous joy.

But now where will we get our grim Irish step dancers?

Not to worry, we've got your faux-twee right here. "So Irish it hurts." 1,693 Irish dancers in Dublin set new record on Sunday with the world's longest Riverdance line.

But honestly, I'll take the two dancers over the 1,600 dancers any day.

And I just realised the Riverdance video I linked to was shot by my friend Darragh! (I genuinely think Ireland is too small to avoid that kind of collision; I've always figured it's three degrees of separation here rather than six...)

I love this. We've been in need of that vitamin D for some time.
