Crazy like a texting fox

Fox steals cell phone. Fox sends texts with stolen cell phone. Cuteness ensues. [Cached version]

With video!

The lesson here is to not install apps on your phone that make rabbit sounds to attract foxes and then leave your phone lying about where foxes might hear it.

There's probably an Anthony Weiner sexting joke in here, too, but I'll leave that for others to make.

I've actually heard of "predator calling" as a thing, but this is a bit literal.

I see the video, but none of that makes any sense at all.

He better Hope that fox doesn't get into candy crush or something and start paying for stuff.

He loads an app onto his phone that makes delicious rabbit noises, then leaves it in the middle of the yard. What did he expect would happen? I'm totally on the side of the fox with this one.

It'll have to work out it's own deal with the phone company, though.

The fox was adorable, but having never heard a rabbit squeal before I'm curious as to how those sounds were recorded.

It actually got me curious about animal call apps for iOS, there are a couple. I would be willing to be it isn't a recording of a real rabbit in distress but a person using a rabbit distress call thingie like this.

Yeah, having hear rabbit distress calls, I assumed it was a artificial call. Real rabbit screams will haunt you for days.

[insert clever name here]: “Yeah, having hear rabbit distress calls, I assumed it was a artificial call. Real rabbit screams will haunt you for days.”
So there I was, looking through the screen on my back porch at the juvenile rabbit munching the grass and weeds in my yard as I lit a cigarette. "Hello, little Mister Bunny Rabbit," I said, charmed by the sight of the small, woodland creature just a few feet away from me pulling down a particularly tall stalk of grass—"Ca-caw!"—in swoops the hawk, who flies off into woods with the rabbit screaming in its talons.

The sounds made by this app were nothing like that. The fox is cute though.

This guy does a really good distressed rabbit call. It's identical to the sound jackrabbits and cottontails make from my experience hiking around and hearing it live. Kinda sticks with you in a negative ear-wormy way.

Read the article (which was super cute), but I can't imagine why someone would want to have a rabbit's distressed cry on the phone at all. Even to see a fox. Like, it's making me distressed just thinking about it.

But that's because I had rabbits as pets as a kid, and one time when we moved, my rabbit (who was pretty old by then and didn't appreciate being temporarily held in a large empty appliance box until we could put his hutch together) woke me up in the middle of the night -- in my shiny new bedroom filled with hopes and dreams-- with the most horrific scream I've ever heard. I peeked into the box, saw he wasn't moving, and just knew. Most traumatizing pet death I've dealt with yet, made even more so by the knowledge he was obviously in a lot of pain right before he died (not to mention my teenage guilt that it was somehow my fault because I didn't give him enough attention during the chaos of the move to see something was wrong, or being able to give him the comfort he needed).

Basically if you've heard a rabbit scream, you never forget it.

So I'm not going to listen to these links, nope, nuh-uh, no way.

But a texting fox is super adorbs and I hope he gets his own twitter.

Now to really keep punking the fox, you get 'Dude Where's My Droid' and have the rabbit call be the find tone. That way you can occasionally torment the fox in return after he keeps texting you at 3:00 in the morning.

Foxes of course make some pretty nasty noises themselves.

And that is the noise I heard late at night for several weeks wondering what ungodly monster was lurking in the back yard a night. Eventually figure it was foxes when the kits were old enough to start playing in the yard. But man, for a while I wasn't sure if I was going out of my mind or if there was a possessed demon child living in the treeline behind the house.

Rabbit screaming. (not for the faint of heart.)
