Is there an alternate ending? Or is meant to be a soul-crushing parable about the brevity of life and the dangers of achieving your dreams?

There are alternate endings. Notice every stage from the pub on you have the option to head home.
I've been digging some stuff put out by these Major Bueno fellas. They also did a game where you're a werewolf and a game where you are ground control for a space mission. Always with simple game mechanics but fun animation.

Man Pan is great, but it is nice if you can take time with the levels. Bookmarked
.........a game where you are ground control for a space mission.
heh heh.....that one is fun too. Cheesy and short and with a lot of references to.....(stuff you can find out yourself).

Man Pan is great,
Man Pan is the under-appreciated sequel to Pan Man, set in a terrifying distopia where pan rules man with an iron fist, and our titular pan must make choose between the safe easy path and risking it all to free the man slaves, forced to flip in the flipping mines.
