Is there a Squuee! that's appropriate for the 'Mats?

I was really excited by the idea of this but now it's here for me to watch (we couldn't justify going to any of the shows) and now I'm kind of like, maybe I should just remember them the way they were in '86 (I have blocked out the way they were in '91, that was lame).

I have to think about whether to click.

padraigin, click it. If they're awful, then they have fulfilled the Promise Of Punk (i.e., better to die young, yadda yadda yadda). And if they are OK, then rock conquers all.

Honestly, "I Will Dare" sounds pretty good!

Yesterday I walked past the Boston Orpheum: my wife and I took the four kids in to the city for a day of touristing. A few months ago I had been reminiscing with a friend about seeing the 'Mats there, and we realized it was probably just before they broke up. I hope it wasn't something we did, though the show itself was a drunken mess.

Just a (mostly unrelated) heads-up: There's a whole lotta reissuin' going on in the other Minneapolis scene these days.

They'll be in Chicago Sep. 13-15 and Denver Sep 21-22.

Any other MeFites going to the Chicago RiotFest for the next Mats show? We should have a meetup.

First audience recording is up on Dimeadozen. I'm hoping for a soundboard matrix.

Yeah, all the new light on the old funk scene has been pretty great lately.

Hm. Maybe first I set up a tape deck so if it hurts me too badly, I can listen to my beloved copy of The Shit Hits The Fans.

Also, the Suburbs have a new album coming out tomorrow.

The recordings aren't the best, but... they sound good.

THANK GAWD.

Yeah. They sound really good.

I did notice that the pictures of Paul I saw, he looked younger than he did when he was 30, so that's good. Ever since I found out he lives in Edina (what? WHY?) I expect to run into him at Southdale Mall or that big Supertarget, but I guess he doesn't get out much.

I always thought that "if he died in Memphis that'd be cool" was a kind of creepy lyric, but it's extra weird now that the guy's actually dead.

(But yeah, they sound good!)

Even? They were shit drunk.

Which, now that I look at it, works either way.

They were shit, drunk.

They were shit-drunk.

I bet those guys shit themselves on stage more than once.

I'll admit that I'd never seen them before, (Not quite old enough...) but last night?

Was fucking awesome. It's 24 hours later and I'm still grinning like a madwoman.

It was great! I was a little anxious to see them after having been burned by another best-loved band's reunion that was clearly about the paycheck. Not the Replacements though; they seemed to be having a genuinely good time on stage and getting a kick out of playing the hits, even when Paul fake-forgot the lyrics to Androgynous.

And the encore, Paul coming out in a Habs jersey and playing an old show-tune, was brilliant. It was classic Replacements fucking with the audience. After an hour long love-in, the crowd completely turned on them and booed (in good fun though). It was pure gold, all the way.

(Also worth noting: they sound so much better live. There's much about the production on their classic albums that grates on the ears: the 80s drums sound, flange or chorus or whatever on all the guitars. Live, they're just the sweet, stripped down rock band they were meant to be.)

Huh. It's been over 20 years since I last saw the Replacements in concert. They were drunk then too. " The Replacements: Still Drunk After All These Years".

I want that Thinline ssooooooo bad.

May "Squee" and The Replacements never exist in the same universe. Ever. IMHO.

Compare and contrast with their August 1981 show at the 7th Street Entry, a week after Sorry Ma... came out.
