Well, I'm glad that now when anybody asks me how crazy the retro-gaming community is, I can answer with one link.

Hm. Ported to the Virtual Boy (complete with 3D effects), or merely patched through one? It's impossible to tell from the video, and the fact that it's not April is insufficient evidence to rule out a hoax.

Enough people with flash carts have corroborated the story to convince me that it's probably real. Also incredible.

I wish I could go back in time and show this to young child me who just bought a VB on clearance at KB toys. He/I would lose his/my shit.

Based on the forum thread, they used a homebrew fighting game engine and ported the graphics over from the TG-16 version. RetroCollect have a reputation to maintain, so I have no trouble believing them, especially when the video was recorded by them directly.

Also, there's a ROM in the forum thread, but it won't work in an emulator, which is why they had to record out of the VB eyepiece.

Virtual, schmirtual. If they can come up with a Google Glass AR app that allows me to Blanka-troll unsuspecting passersby, then we'll have something to talk about.

That there even exists a Virtual Boy homebrew scene both heartens me and fills me with inexpressible dread.

I love my Virtual Boy, most especially Wario Land. I took the legs off and mounted it to an old, flexible lamp stand so I can essentially pull it down over my head while I'm laying on the couch. Leaning into the mask is hard on the back.

My friend and I invested in a few working and non-working units in college. If you decide to wade into the world of retro console gaming it helps to have repair parts on hand.

And let this be a warning to you - to enjoy gameplay on the VB you need to have won a highly unpredictable genetic lottery. I've never experienced problems with it - however my friend immediately discovered that the unit gives him unrelenting migraines. To the best of my knowledge there's no sure way to predict how your body will respond until you try. This, for me, is the allure of the system. Perhaps endless, red-tinted fun. Perhaps searing inter-cranial pain. You cannot know in advance. You must put on the mask and roll the dice.

How brilliant. Crazy and brilliant.
