[I detected a strange creature.]

August has been a strange and confusing month for some of the Internet's most famous cats. Maru, Master of Boxes That Are Bigger On The Inside, was presented with a new kitten companion who will travel with him across that impossibly clean floor and anywhere else they can manage. He is adjusting. (Posts are in Japanese and excellent English. Cute Overload's commenters have attempted to smooth out the Google translations of the Japanese: 1. 2.) And back in the States, Grumpy Cat met Lil Bub at a film festival. There were some flattened ears and bodies (Jezebel post with two vines), but no Eve-Margo tributes. Bonus retro musical link for Canadians.

This is a perfect storm of all the things that make my internal life worth living.

(To clarify, in my head, I live on a well-appointed island completely surrounded by various cats. It's very soothing.)

Maru and Hana don't even look like the same species. Long legs? Pointy ears? Will she even be able to cram them into a box half her size?

Maymo the Lemon Beagle, however, finds that his new little sister Penny the Puppy may share more of his looks than his personality.

Maru's new roommate is named Hana. Rough English translation: Cousin Oliver.

It is hard being a cat. People keep messing with you by introducing kittens and things. Sigh. This nonsense really cuts into the regular nap schedules.....

Maru: [I detected a strange creature]
Maru: [Wow, this is a terrible creature]

I understand you completely, my friend. Such is the burden of interacting with members of our respective species.

i was stunned and shocked when maru got a new room mate. I've noticed that the activity on his blog has decreased over the past seasons... i hope that this either blows new life into the project, or that maru's taller roommates have moved on to other, equally interesting and adorable things.

In other important August internet cat news, Colonel Meow is now the official world record holder for longest fur on a cat.

Is the new kitten named Hana? I ask because a friend of mine in Melbourne had two cats named Hana and Maru, entirely by coincidence.

Oh, God, ten seconds into that clip the puppy does this perfect "wtf?" take to the camera.

Penny is such a perfect straight man to Maymo's ridiculousness that it is fucking impossible not to thoroughly anthropomophize them as a classic comedy duo.

A bad translation had me thinking the new kitten's name was Chibi. Does chibi mean something in Japanese?

I think it means " upright citizen". The next time you meet a Japanese businessman or potential father in law you should totally assess him as"chibi-kun".

( not really)

In slightly older Junior Internet Cat News, in May, Laurie and Craig of popular foster kitten blog The Itty Bitty Kitty Committee, despite a firm, long-held policy to the contrary, decided to adopt their special-needs foster kitten Wylla. Resident housemothercat and face of IBKC Charlene Butterbean enjoys the permanent company.

Woah. Maru looks a lot like the cat I had growing up, and Maru's new companion looks a lot like my current cat. Heh.
