Tifo

The Major League Soccer playoffs have begun and the MLS Cup is on the line. After beating Colorado this week, the Seattle Sounders will now face their fiercest rivals, the Portland Timbers, in a two leg Western Conference semi-final Cascadia derby. They'll have to beat both the Timbers and the Timbers Army, who will no doubt produce yet another incredible display of tifo.

Do you have an alternative source for the video? The second link asks me to install a "Hook" player.

I would be sad that the Fire didn't make the playoffs, but the "Chicago" Fire aren't in Chicago, so fuck it. Bury me in Green and Gold.

This is a great rivalry, hopefully one of the all time greats. Seattle is electric.

Man I remember the Seattle Sounders from NASL days! I bet these are all different players.

The tifo culture in the Cascadia rivalry is phenomenal. I kinda liked this Conan-inspired one from the Sounders a few years ago. There's definitely something huge going on in soccer in the Pacific Northwest.

By the way, as a Vancouver Whitecaps supporter I am only posting this because in that rematch in the video Portland helped us win the Cascadia Cup

Tifo, for those who don't know what it means and don't have time for a fifteen minute video.

Ahhh, and the video starts with a nice sunny August day in the Pacific Northwest.

Related to the upcoming playoff derby and rivalry, here's a compilation of the best bad chants hashtag from today.

GO SOUNDERS!

There's too much Flounder in this thread for my liking.

As a Timbers supporter and TA member for the last 11 years, I can honestly say one of the things that drew me in was the sheer exuberance the TA shows each and every game. I'm a football and baseball fan, but no other live sporting event compares to sitting with the TA during a soccer match. I attended both the games shown in the video and while it was great to be at Century Link field with 60,000 soccer fans, the match at Jeld-Wen with 22,000 people who were on their feet the whole match was unforgettable. The stadium literally vibrated for 90 minutes with the energy the crowd had during the game.

There's definitely something huge going on in soccer in the Pacific Northwest.

One of my favorite memories from this year is watching the championship game for the Portland Thorns in a packed Bagdad Theatre, which was packed with fans of all ages.

Looks like they're doing the same for the Timbers games as well--no Tifo but there should be a big crowd.

This is what happens when the only other game in town is either the Blazers or the Seahawks. Anyway, the more obscure the chant the better. When I went to see the Galaxy last year, the Riot Squad started chanting about Didier Drogba going to play in China. It had absolutely no bearing on the game at hand, and it was awesome.

Sounders definitely have the edge on tifos at the moment, although there are better and better ones happening all around the league. I've done JW and the Clink both and while JW puts up a great effort for its size, as a biased Seattle fan it really can't compare to the Clink, especially when we do hit 50K and up.

Do you remember that episode of Friends where Ross and Monica play football over Thanksgiving and the winner got the Geller Cup, which was a troll doll nailed to a 2x4? Until I see evidence to the contrary, that's what I'm going to imagine the MLS Cup looks like.

Here you go, dry white toast. And might I suggest that you get a troll trophy yourself?

A few of my favorite Sounders tifo: this and this and one from this season. Will be interested to see what the ECS can pull out of their hat for tonight's match (given the short 3 day notice).

Can't wait for the metafilter snarkfest to descend on this thread like they do on all the american football threads!!! No? Nothing?

That being said I was very disappointed in my Chicago Fire this year. They can do better than they did and need to to get the city behind them. I hear about the sox, cubs, bears, bulls and blackhawks before I ever hear about the Fire which sucks. It's hard to change a sports culture, but I try to at least be an evangelist for the soccer team to people who are new to the concept of American Soccer. You'd be surprised how many Chicagoans aren't really aware of the MLS or of the Fire either.
