Back in the late 1400s, Leonardo da Vinci invented an experimental musical instrument called the viola organista, with a piano-like mechanism that brings spinning bows in contact with strings, as keys are pressed. While Leonardo never made his invention, pianist and composer Sławomir Zubrzycki built his own and then played it. More photos here and performance/interview footage here.
