Vocal band Pentatonix (previously) presents A Daft Punk Medley

If anybody other than The Whelk had told me that an acapella group could improve on Daft Punk (and fully stylistically integrate the '70s Disco of "Get Lucky" with the rest of their '90s techno), I'd have told them they were (a) nuts (b) stoned (c) selling me a bridge (d) all of the above (although I'd still listen to Whelker's pitch for the bridge). Bravo.

Wow. To say that I did not care for that would be...putting it mildly.

The heavy vocal processing really rubbed me the wrong way. I could understand if they were going for a robotic vocoder/autotune effect a la early Daft Punk, but using the heavy vocal-doubling and pitch correction of the sort typically reserved for manufactured pop stars doesn't just undermines their credibility as a vocal group.

The vocal production is similar on the other videos of theirs I watched, so maybe they just need a new producer.

I decided Superfruit was probably too niche to warrant a post of its own no matter how squee I am about it, but I'll leave these here: 2/5 of Pentatonix plus kitten. 2/5 of Pentatonix plus one awful blonde wig.

Did not expect this nightmare fuel on MeFi.

they're going for a specific style on purpose - you might not like it, but it's been very successful for them. i think they and (their sizable fan base) would disagree about needing a new producer.

Those voices aren't corrected at all, they really sound like that. It's part of the same neural augmentation that makes their eyes glow blue. (BTW, visor guy hates it when you call him Geordi.)

...in contrast to the usual nightmare fuel?

I'm up all night because I'm an insomniac work-a-holic with deadlines, loud kids and presents to wrap.

... and I dig this.

I really like this cover and it has been part of my 'REPEAT UNTIL YOU CAN'T HEAR THEM AGAIN WITHOUT CRINGING' playlist lately.

Pentatonix's Little Drummer Boy cover is probably one of the weirdest things I have ever heard though.

How so? It seems kind of a standard pop Christmas carol arrangement. It's a pretty good one, but I don't know what you'd think is weird about it.

For comparison, check out this (20-year-old) Take 6 a capella arrangement of "The Little Drummer Boy."

Kind of unhappy that I discovered this a day after their last MeFi post, so I couldn't post it then. Alas.

Anybody who does tribute to "Digital Love" makes me happy cos that's my favorite.

I agree that the vocal processing is a little much, but for me the entire enterprise is redeemed by how much their alto visibly loves to sing. I mean they're all into it, but that guy is barely managing to repress a manic grin. They just need to back off the reverb just a skosh. (IMHO.)

That vocal percussion is insane. also I love this and I don't care who knows.

Oh I have a giant soft spot for acappella. I blame all the college acappella groups that did the high school assembly circuit. Impressionable age. I even auditioned my freshman year in college for one group and they kindly let me down with a "whoah you have a big range" while not pointing out that I wasn't exactly hitting the correct notes from baritone to soprano.

Little Drummer Boy gives me chills because Kevin really is amazing, and it really is his song.

I do agree that I'm not the biggest fan of the way the audio's being handled, but I actually think it sounds better in Daft Punk than it does most of them. One of the things I like about Mitch and Scott screwing around with Defying Gravity is that it's considerably less forced-perfect and still sounds brilliant.

For me it feels like someone made an overproduced cover of the Happy Birthday song. I mean, it's pretty nice but... weird.

I'm not crazy about this, but I will always have a soft spot for Pentatonix because of how great they were on The Sing-Off. See: their powerful and innovative rendition of Dog Days Are Over.

I'm actually surprised by how many people in this post don't like the video!

As someone who grew up listening to acapella and yet generally hates it (NOT EDGY ENOUGH), I really dig Pentatonix. Their rendition of Kanye's Love Lockdown in particular gives me chills. I have tickets to see them live in February and I can't wait.

(Mitch and Scott are also sooooooooo adorable in Superfruit, their vlog series.)

OK, I see what you mean. Although there's also plenty of overproduced covers of "Happy Birthday" out there as well.

Here's a cool a capella medley by Local Vocal: 1 2 and previously; I just discovered it through an exhibition on voice.
