Noclip

"Noclip" is a fake trailer, for a movie that, for now, is not going to be made, about the incredible power of its characters to defy the physics of the world they live in, almost as if they were cheating a videogame.

Wasn't that the plot of 'Heroes?

I thought this was the premise of The Matrix.

I like the animation style.

Someone in the audience has to type in the third word on page 5 of the instruction booklet before the movie can start.

This is pretty. Not sure if there's much story there, though, at least there's not much visible in the trailer.

Or is it a real trailer for a fake movie?
posted by mrnutty at 3:07 PM on December 18, 2013

It's not a real trailer, or it would give away absolutely everything that happens in the movie.

Damn you! I'm too slow being back in GMT+8.

I'd settle for toggleable notarget.

How is BABA made?

This is definitely the plot of my semi infamous self-published web novel, only I went on to point out that it's not very much fun to play the game with the cheat codes on all the time.

That's why you would use idkfa instead of iddqd.

I thought this was the premise of The Matrix.

Both the premise and the animation style remind me of one of my favorite animated shorts ever -- an Animatrix segment called "Beyond." It's about what might happen if you ever stumbled into an unstable area of the Matrix full of surreal "glitches" in the fabric of reality. "Noclip" might never be, but in the meantime this short is a dead ringer for it -- whimsical and beautiful (and mildly creepy).

Looks sort of like Jamie Hewlett meets Eric Chahi. Like.

Man, that scene with the dancing... Gah. If someone could actually fit a story into this aesthetic, it would definitely be something I'd want to see.

Oh, that's lovely animation. I was casting about for a kickstarter or indiegogo link as soon as the video finished. It brought to mind Dennou Coil as recounted by Gorillaz for me.

+1 to hearing and seeing some Gorillaz influence. Not really clear on what this is otherwise, but looks cool.

You'll notice a lot of the content of the trailer is from Eva Figueroa López's Show Reel from earlier this year (also on Vimeo), including some of the most "video game in real life" clips and one particular odd transition (girl on lamppost to pancake flipping). Either this is a project she's been working on for some time or it's just a hellagood expanded Audition Reel.

The funny thing is games don't have cheat codes anymore. Why give away cheat codes for free when you can charge for them via microtransactions?

Among other loathesome aspects of Clive Barker's Jericho was having to call in and give your game's code in order to unlock cheat codes. Several people reported unannounced phone bill charges for it.

This can actually happen IRL! In theory, but so improbable that you might as well say impossible.
I forgot the general science book it was in (maybe The Elegant Universe?).
There was a section about how if you keep tapping a wall with your hand, there is tiny buy >0 chance that all the atoms in your hand and the wall line up perfectly and pass through each other without any ?electromagnetic/gravity? effect on any surrounding atom.

The other takeaway I remember was that we never actually touch anything. It's the EM/gravity that actually does the grabbing, holding, hitting, touching.

Or I am just imagining the above and pulled it out of my ass (I have been known to do that-but not on purpose)

Solid matter is held together by electronic interaction between the outer shell electrons of the individual atoms. For practical purposes those form a continuous field. Two solid pieces of matter cannot pass through one another regardless of their orientation because the atoms would be much closer together than this electronic interaction allows. "Touch" is the interaction of two such massed continuous fields repelling one another.

If you want to be picky about it "solid matter" is mostly empty space, but it's empty space filled with electric fields that make it act like a unified object so from our perspective calling this mostly empty space thing solid makes sense, as it acts quite different from space that is completely empty.
