I am so irrationally upset that they both have socks on.

Contemporary! Not modern! I saw no anguished floor pounding.

Modern is traditionally performed barefoot.

Ok, how can I go see contemporary dance now? This has ruined it for me. Damn you Metafilter!

Sitting through endless kids contemporary dances my partner and I were watching this and yelling "yes!"... "yes!"... so many formula driven steps - great stuff.

This is so great. I love So You Think You Can Dance way more than I expected to, but I always hate it when the contemporary dancers choreograph their own solos, because it's exactly this shit, over and over again, plus totally melodramatic emotion. I chalked it up to them all being like 19 though.

The dancers from more traditional styles (ballet, ballroom, tap) or hip-hop styles always have more interesting routines.

For a while, the trend was for the female contemporary dancers to wear just underwear with camisole-type tanks, and dance to rock music, and it always looked like they were basically dancing around their bedrooms.

This is every annoying trope on So You Think You Can Dance, except one. The move where a female dancer does the splits, but vertical, and very slowly. It's a variation on the "show your wa-wa" move in the video, but it takes like 10-15sec out of a routine and sure it's incredible that people have that kind of flexibility but it's almost like checkboxes on a chart how people's routines include almost all of these and it gets boring eventually.
