Why can't we undo this evil? I weep when I contemplate the mild anger of these young black men compared to the enormous injustice they suffer every day of their lives.

Oh hey, I missed this initially.

It's a pretty important story (UCLA is one of if not the best school in California--why isn't it admitting more black men?) but for some reason it's not getting a lot of press (it's also a pretty complicated story, with UCLA having very publicly thumbed its nose at laws against affirmative action a few years ago and working to admit as diverse a class as they could under the laws, but still ending up with a heavily Asian and white and female student body).

One of my friends is black and we met at UCLA, so this is a topic near and dear to my heart. Comparatively, the diversity at UCLA isn't as bad as the diversity at the small liberal arts college I went to for undergrad but was much worse than Cal State Long Beach where my friend had gone for undergrad. We came with two very different perspectives, and my friend ended up being something of an activist for more black people at UCLA and in our profession. Nice--though very frustrating--to hear that that tradition of activism continues.

UCLA is very good at nurturing activists but I wish it were better at admitting people of color so they could focus their activism on something else.
