There's no other way to put this. You are about to watch a video of a cat on a skateboard. Have fun.

Lucky for you, the video was posted by an animal trainer. Here are his cat training videos.

I'll admit that I didn't expect going in to watch the entire 3 and a half minutes of a skateboarding cat video, but I did. Started to falter when I realized that there was a whole minute of credits, but I watched that too!

Skateboarding cat is awesome. Skateboarding cat who ALSO DOES PARKOUR IN THE MIDDLE OF SKATEBOARDING is the king of cats.

Meowow! That looks like fun! Didga looks happy too.

Cats already come with parkour built-in as a standard feature, although many of them don't feel like demonstrating it.

I think it could just as easily been titled "Journey of a Thousand Takes."

I'm hopeful this might become opening credits to a Littlest Hobo style program where Didga chances upon innocent victims in need of help. Help that only a very small, furry, proficient skateboarder can successfully offer. With crime solved and a quick nap, Digda then skates off to the same theme. Until next week.

That has sent my five year old son running to find our staunch independent, child-intolerant cat:
"Christopher! Do you want to learn some tricks?! I will give you biscuits!"

I don't fancy his chances.

But how did the skateboard move? So confused. Didga only put his foot down twice!

Willpower. Bill installed the camera too.

Are there a lot of skateboarding cats in Australia? I ask because most of the people in the background of the video seem to take Didja's rather impressive feats in stride.

Me, I'd be all like, "Hey, look at that cat! He's skateboarding!"

It's like 135 degrees out in Australia, I assume those people are just happy to be alive.

I like Didga's "gettin' stuff done" face. That cat is on-task.

also i suspect that the cat is not actually skateboarding all by itself, this is just a neverending series of betrayals basically

Seriously though what was making the board move? Why are so few people concerned about this?
posted by TheRedArmy at 4:39 PM on January 20, 2014 [2 favorites]

I suspect it is mostly camera + skateboard + cat being pulled along by a string.

Also, the trick at 1:29 breaks the illusion because damnit the skateboard is moving BACKWARDS after the cat jumps up onto the sign and then it is moving FORWARDS AGAIN when the cat jumps down from the sign.

It is an awfully nice cat though.

It took several viewings before I saw it (and honestly, I'm ashamed to admit how many times I've watched this today), but you can see the string at 2:26.

I was about to say "meh," until Didja hopped on and off the wall while the skateboard kept going.

Also, pretty sure Ollie is a radio-controlled skateboard.
posted by underthehat at 4:53 PM on January 20, 2014

I think it is pretty obvious that spirits are moving Ollie. If you could see the shape made by their passage... well, let's just say you would not appreciate the explanation.

Anyone who didn't realise this was a cat being pulled along on a skateboard with some edits of it jumping on/off the skateboard is a dim goon and will die a meaningless death.

Most importantly, there is a pomeranian in the credits.

what I love about this video is that it succinctly demonstrates that any cat may be "trained" to do a thing, if that is a thing it naturally enjoys doing in the first place. This is how I leash trained one of our current fuzzballs to walk on a leash within a week. He is a naturally curious and gregarious cat who was interested from the start in going outside and exploring things so I merely channeled that behavior into his understanding of "cool, if walk along the sidewalk pulling the monkey along on this string contraption, I get to see/smell/explore INFINITE THINGS!!!111". Anytime he tried to dart too far into people's yards or across the street, I just stopped. He figured it out on his own.

All that to say, I have seen several skateboardcat videos before, mainly because my ex roommate discovered them and Didja bears a freakishly close resemblance to his awesome cat. With the difference being that Billy would do incredibly intricate parkour moves inside our apartment going after houseflies, and Didja shows a preference for riding a moving skateboard. One of the earlier skateboard videos I've seen of him shows his owner simply rolling the skateboard past the cat, and Didja jumping onto it, then jumping off onto a nearby wall. This video is excellent because (the magic of editing aside) it clearly shows how this "shaped" behavior has been developed into a pretty awesome series of tricks.

Didja is awesome. Good kitty! *skritches*

obvs ymmv if all your cat truly enjoys doing is knocking shit over and peeing on walls, so good luck with that
