Stop Stop Winny!

Alien is a very strange but alluring music video from Japanese hardcore band Maximum the Hormone.

Maximum the Hormone is probably most well known for Koi no Mega Lover.

What just happened? Did I die? Is this heaven?

Between how metal they are, the fact they toured with the Dropkick Murphys for a bit, their wicked sense of humor, and the relative popularity of Death Note outside of Japan I always find it inconceivable that Maximum the Hormone aren't hugely popular internationally, at least within certain sub-genres/culture.

Is it because of how god damn catchy they are? I mean, Sigh even gets international releases and they, as awesome as they are, feel like a much harder sell than the Maximum guys/gal.

Oh well, always glad to be reminded about them!

Now that I've managed to squeeze my brain back into my skull, are there any Mefites with Japanese language skills who can translate what MtH are saying at the end of the "Alien" video? I'm really curious now.

Oh god, I love these guys.

I can only agree with them on all points raised - if Stop! Stop! Stop the whinny upload is a call for the entire human race to steer away from cute animal videos and start to take our responsibilities as the species unexpectedly in charge of the planet seriously.

May be overthinking this.

Ok the weird anthem rock, J-pop, sort of metal fusion in Lutoslawski's link is addictive. Love it.

This is like the Boredoms on acid. And considering the Boredoms were like someone taking acid, on acid, this is just...just...perfect.

Love MtH. But I'll disagree that their most famous song is "Koi no Mega Lover". It has to be What's Up, People, the opening to Death Note, as noted above.

Winny is/was a Japanese filesharing program something like Edonkey.

There's a full translation of the video here.

Ok, I started watching, and then I took a drink and played my turn on letterpress, and then I looked back and was delighted.

I usually confine my metal to stoner, and REALLY REALLY OLD SKOOL (slabbath) stuff. This however, made me very happy. The goofy weirdness, the hardcore punk styling in the early part of the song, the little kids. OK, some of my nieces are big Death Note fans. I suppose it wouldn't kill me to check it out. Now get offa my lawn!

Ok, but only because, for a lawn chaser offer, you seem rather polite and open-minded.

ardgedee, that's marvelous. If only Metallica had that same sense of humor about filesharing.

I actually marathoned Death Note a couple of years ago on Hulu, and developed a bizarre fondness for the opening/closing themes (which reminded me of System Of A Down), but never got around to seeking out more by the band. Until now.

The thing that blows my mind about these guys is that they're able to FUCKING UNLEASH on the heavy stuff, but aren't totally married to it like most metal/hardcore bands are. What's more, they're not afraid of totally jettisoning the angsty grimdark alienated-adolescent BS to just cut loose and be unabashedly silly.

I've always found that the best metal (maybe just the best music) is the stuff that has a sense of humor about itself.

Just to add to Lutoslawski & xigxag's links - here's a copy of the video with English subtitles included.

They're like...the Japanese version of Into the Moat mixed with The Cars?

It's awesome, I am really into this.
