What men find behind female masks

Female masking is a form of cross-dressing in which men wear masks that present them as female. The Atlantic looks into the practice to find out why it's so common.

Never heard of/about it and just finished the Atlantic article. Interesting but I question the phrase "find out why it is so common". Common seems to be a stretch--it would seem based on these links, and just a little research, it could be described as quite unusual if not rare.
