Just seeing the Daft Punk vs Strongbad mashup for the first time now. The most common criticism of it seems to be that its just the same joke over and over for an hour. To me, that is the feature not the flaw. I literally had an embarrassing moment where a shot snot out of my nose in a sudden blurt laugh that turned into an extended fit of laughter that I am having sincere trouble stopping.

Every time in something like this or, say, Teen Girl Squad where the joke seems a little thin, I remember that this is Strong Bad's idea of what is awesome, and that makes it funny again.

straight: Huh? Are you seeing something I missed or is that just a verbose way of saying "meh"?

Yeah no, I also read the bit at the end about "five, ten, fifteen, whatever it takes" as suggesting that we shouldn't be looking for regular content. I do think it would be nice if they could give us a definitive "series finale" kind of a thing. Maybe a parody of a Six Feet Under style "Where are they now?" ending to put a nice bow on the whole thing? It's so cool to see that the brothers ended up involved in some of my favorite kids programming on TV, even if the The Homestar Runner Show that I so desperately wanted back in the day never came to pass. If you like H*R and are not into Gravity Falls you should check it out, it's definitely in the same spirit.

Oh, and those Windows 98 desktop themes offered for downloads, there are a few cool files in there. In addition to MP3s of Strong Bad's start up sound and HR+SB's shutdown duet, there's sounds for a number of system events, including Strong Bad going "Oh!" and "Aw!" for windows maximize and minimize events, and for program crashes Homestar saying "Oops... you bwoke it."
posted by JHarris at 3:07 PM on April 2, 2014

I do think it would be nice if they could give us a definitive "series finale" kind of a thing.

I had kind of figured that the five episodes of Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People ended up being this. It may not give the characters an "ending" -- and I really don't think there's anything about the Homestar universe that demands one -- but those games are a huge enormous helping of Homestar / Strong Bad craziness. I think the five games end up representing a significant percentage of the total Strong Bad / Homestar content the Brothers Chaps have made, and while they're kind of so-so as adventure games, the quality of the comedy is high throughout, on par with the better SBemails.

It seems to me that making those games must have been pretty exhausting, and I wasn't at all surprised they didn't do much more afterwards. And I think they were a pretty high note for Strong Bad et. al. to go out on.
posted by straight at 8:53 PM on April 2, 2014 [2 favorites]

Myself, I think the Brothers Chaps didn't intend to end Homestar Runner, and that they still don't. I think they just have other projects -- projects that probably pay a lot better. Also, according to some stuff in their RSS feed (which I would happy dig up for you OH WAIT GOOGLE READER GOT KILLED), one of them had a new baby at about the time the Great Hiatus began, and that would be a serious drain on anyone's time. But they had been heard to say that they would update the site again, "when you least expect it," although I don't remember where I heard it.
