The Republican Party began selling new web domains ending in .gop today at www.join.gop. Public interest has definitely been sparked, but perhaps not for the reasons Republicans have hoped.

"As the only web ending run by a political party, .gop makes history by connecting conservatives, Republicans and all who identify with the GOP movement with an easily identifiable online presence to create a national support structure for the Republican Party. The .gop registry is a technology endeavor dedicated to positioning the Republican Party at the forefront of innovation and advancing Republican principles. .gop is the place where you can find conservative people and ideas on the web. The standard price for domains is $20.16 to show our alignment towards winning the White House in 2016. The website is fully functioning in English and Spanish and strikes an open and inclusive tone consistent with the core values of the .gop domain – the Republican neighborhood online."

If you buy it during the current rush they'll be too overwhelmed to screen 'em all, and the odds are decent that yours'll be a keeper as long as nobody files a complaint.

Once the traffic tapers off, they'll probably be vetting applications more carefully. By hand if they have any sensibility about the technology involved. hee.

So uh, what the fuck is the deal with a political party getting a TLD?

WSJ, April 23, 2014:

"On Monday, trademarked companies will be able to register for domain names ending in .gop during the 60-day “Sunrise Period” mandated by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, the group in charge of handing out domain names and Web addresses for the Internet. Open registration will begin July 7, when the first .gop sites will begin going live. ...

"The domain .gop won’t be the only new label to hit the Internet. The initiative is part of a recent move by ICANN to expand the number of website endings. A number of other endings—including .nike, .netflix and .gay—are slated to launch in the coming months."

I am so amused that Piss.GOP is selling for $2,500. They knew that someone, somewhere would want to buy a website to show a mason jar full of tinky with a Ronald Reagan bobble head bouncing off the amber waves, and rather than over regulating the situation with a straight ban, they decided to raise the price and let market forces sort it out.

Much as I'd like to believe it, I'm having a hard time believing that some Republican operative actually sat down and decided that "stormfront.gop" should go for $1,000. Is there a more plausible explanation? Is it perhaps based on some list of existing .com websites that have some significant amount of traffic?

Hmmm... but cnet.gop is $20.16. As are baidu.gop, wordpress.gop, metafilter.gop, craigslist.gop, slashdot.gop, paypal.gop, and netflix.gop.

So... seriously, someone in some official capacity at the GOP decided stormfront.gop should go for $1,000?

Or maybe does it have built-in reselling support? Like, some random racist bought stormfront.gop for $20.16, and then listed it for sale for $1,000?

Man, I know it's a tempting trade to give money to the GOP in exchange for ripping on the GOP, but it's pretty likely that they'll have the last laugh. As owner of a TLD they're essentially setting up as a registrar, and one that will for sure have final say on any content you put on your site. See that bit about "tone consistent with the core values of the .gop domain"? I don't think that's just something that sounds good. This is going to be heavily policed. I'd say your best bet is to snatch up something that SOUNDS legit and have your site be a clever subversion of GOP values. Or actually, your best bet is to not throw your money to the cartoon villains, but whatever.

It's on the premium domain list, but http://www.jesus.gop, filled with nothing but stuff like "whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me" and "You cannot serve both God and Money" — that would be pretty awesome.

If you can't get jesus.gop, .truechristian.gop is avail for $20.16

While the Party will not profit from it (a serious error on their part), .democrat domains are available for $29.95 and up. And .green is coming soon.

My domain register, Namecheap, doesn't sell .gop, but it does have .ceo, .guru, .land & .club for one-percenters (as well as the self-referencial .domains). And an email it sent me today promises to add .pub, .bar & .rest later this week, .gripe next week, .toys on July 30th, and .fail & .wtf on August 6th.

It's all only gonna get more fun.

I'm still tempted to get metafilter.gov, redirect it here and match the $20.16 with a contribution to the Blue (if nobody beats me to it... it may take a while to check my finances).

How many elected positions does the GOP contest over the course of 4 years at the state and federal level (or does the GOP also contest County/Municipal elections)? If they require everyone who is on a GOP ticket to buy THEIRNAME.State.GOP I bet they make that money back in no time.

Interesting. They've "premium" reserved the names of both Republican candidates for governor here in Massachusetts. And scottbrown.gop is not just reserved, but flat out unavailable, which I assume means they've already bought it.

(Side note: brown.gop is $500, which made me curious: white and black.gop are reserved, as are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and pink. purple.gop will run you $5K.)

Someone registered twogirlsone.gop, and I suspect it was someone who saw this thread (unless the joke was that obvious). So I'm simultaneously sad that someone gave the GOP $20.16 and that, if it was going to happen anyway, I wasn't the one to get it.

Whoever you are, please make the most of that medium. People on the internet have been deeply scarred by the source of that domain name, and also by the Brazilian scat porn video it references.
posted by Riki tiki at 4:09 PM on July 20, 2014 [1 favorite]

And like that, twogirlsone.gop was gone.

Whoever you were, anonymous domain registrant, I wish you well. If you still feel like using a top-level domain to mock a destructive party, one that pretends it works in the best interest of its poorest constituents and earns their loyalty with amazing efficacy, but actually does its best to worsen their situation at every opportunity? Well, there's always twogirlsone.kp.
