Japanese Doctor Who (SLYT). A highlight clip from the long-running tokusatsu series which featured a multitude of actors, in addition to a variety of period costumes and wood-and-resin models, and location shots mostly based in a public park or rock quarry. The program's haunting soundtrack can be heard in the later portion of the piece.

Pertwee’s Venusian Aikido was better.

Great and powerful, Metafilter! Tell me if this is fake vintage or real. It is awesome, but something about it makes me think it was made recently and then vintage-ized.

Well, it makes apparent both the sonic and the screwdriver aspects of the sonic screw sword.

I'm partial to the anime, myself.

The Sonic Sword melody is actually really clever, a reference to both the Second Doctor and the Green Ranger.

Original Vimeo page?

Yeah, AFAIK that's the original page. They did a good job, but it wasn't convincing (not that I think they were trying to be 100% convincing). It did remind me of "Kikaida," in the same unironically goofy sort of way, so well done overall!

LinkedIn pages for some of the people in the credits on the Vimeo page mention a "Japanese Doctor Who parody video" collaborative project and link to the YT video in the OP, so the pretense that it was found footage isn't even someone trying to rip it off, that would seem to be a promotional thing. The same LinkedIn pages say that it was made in London in May of this year.

I would have awarded this infinite points if it had included a Hayakawa Dalek reference.

I once read a Japanese mystery novel where the killer was doing his wicked deeds by misusing electronic music, so there is that.

the long-running tokusatsu series

I initially misread this as a tonkatsu series, and was intrigued.

tonkatsu series

Is that what they mean by chop-socky?

Better than "Let's Kill Hitler", but that's an extremely low hurdle to clear.

No, you don't.

Tell me if this is fake vintage or real.

I vote the former. There's something too sharp and clear and non-gritty about the quality that says to me that it's something made...not in the 70s. Maybe last year, even. Stuff from that era is almost always scratchy, over saturated, over contrasty, etc.
