I don't even watch GOT but I have a deep emotional investment in the likeness between Hodor and American Treasure Phil Kessel.

I am Groot!

For years, I had the dream of a presentation that would be a huge, empty stage with Ricardo Montalbán on one side saying boldly "Chrysler Cordoba!" while Patrick Stewart answered his gravely from the other side saying "Pontiac!" In my dream, this goes on for hours.

Now, this FPP and you have given me a new dream....

I had no idea I wanted this but now I want it so very much.

One of my brothers used his own single word for all purposes rather than pointless baby talk . . . even now he is in an active, principled war with the rules of standard spelling. His word was "Mamboo." It's amazing how much a single two syllable word with no known meaning can convey.

Is this something you have to Hodor to Hodor?
posted by Mchelly at 9:36 AM on July 31, 2014 [1 favorite]

The wife and I do this. Basically one of us will hear the other say something to the other from across the house that sounds anywhere between "The bay be es remping eleventeen the state." and "Mrufhrpfvls eniryrh verrst."

The hearer will reply, loud enough that the speaker will be able to hear and understand the reply with either "Hodor!" or "Hodor?!" or "Hodor?", depending on the gravity of said initial encrypted communique.

It actually works and has probably saved us from more than one potentially escalating shouting match. Thus 'Hodor' in our house translates into "You're putting me in the situation whereby I can not understand, and thus not help resolve, the situation or question you're attempting to convey. Let us rethink this, perhaps with more understanding, attempt from both sides of the house."

Sometimes I'm tempted to interject it into the mefi comment stream, but then I realize not everyone would get it and being willfully obscure is not what Hodor is all about. It's really not.

To Hodor not to hod.

To Hodor not to hod: that is the Hodor:
Whether 'tis Hodor in the mind to Hodor
The slings and Hodor of outrageous Hodor,
Or to Hodor against Hodor of troubles,
And by opposing Hodor? Hodor: to sleep;
Hodor; and by Hodor to say we end
The Hodor and the Hodor natural shocks
Hodor is heir to, 'tis a consummation
Devoutly to Hodor. To die, Hodor;
To sleep: perchance Hodor: ay, there's Hodor;
For in Hodor of death Hodor may come
When we have Hodor off this Hodor coil,
Must give Hodor: there's the Hodor
That makes calamity of Hodor life;
Hodor would bear Hodor and scorns Hodor,
The oppressor's wrong, the Hodor's contumely,
Hodor of despised love, Hodor's delay,
The insolence of Hodor and Hodor
That Hodor merit of the unworthy takes,
When he himself Hodor quietus make
With a bare Hodor? who would Hodor bear,
To grunt Hodor under a Hodor life,
But that Hodor of something after death,
The undiscover'd country from Hodor
No traveller Hodors, puzzles Hodor
And makes us Hodor bear those ills we have
Hodor to others that we know Hodor?
Thus Hodor does make cowards of us all;
And thus the Hodor hue of resolution
Is sicklied o'er with the pale Hodor thought,
And enterprises of great pith and Hodor
With this Hodor their Hodor turn awry,
And lose the name of Hodor.

I've got a few of those actually. "Drebnar," "Fibula," and, often mime-ing a duck's mouth with my hand, "Quack." Drebnar, due to being entirely meaningless, is kind of a personal trademark.
