Idris Elba makes this cis-het male swoon. Do go on...

I always enjoy seeing him in films, and he has a pretty badass name. Makes me think of Idris Gawr, who was, appropriately, a giant.

I love Idris Elba's acting. With that said, King of Speed is not very good at all.
posted by Thorzdad at 9:57 AM on August 8, 2014 [1 favorite]

I feel like his talents are being wasted lately. Pacific Rim was basically "eh stick Idris in the film, he's cool", though he was mostly lost in front of the green screen. If it's not clear by now, I think my point is more intimate work like Luther please.

Seriously, this is all just a race to see who posts the "Idris Elba's dick as seen through sheer trousers" pic that's been flying around, right? Not it.

But dang.

I have not seen this "pic" of which you speak.

Elba has starred in a few commercials depicting the regular guy.... He comes across as being just like us...
Idris Elba can do some amazing acting, but "regular guy who's just like us" is really not among them, sorry. He's fucking awesome, and there ain't a bushel big enough to hide that under.

Those aren't sheer.

I did just look at a lot of pictures of Idris Elba so i am not upset. It wad very pleasant and I think I will continue doing that.

Probably until I starve to death.

I pretty much immediately googled "Idris Elba pants" and.......woah

Idk, I think his most "regular guy" role to date was Mumbles in Rocknrolla. He and Tom Hardy and Gerard Butler all had that sort of "ordinary blokes reluctantly forced into extraordinary lives" vibe going pretty hard and it was a good show all around.

That is true in so many ways.

When I clicked on this thread I knew elizardbits was going to bring up Tom Hardy and Rocknrolla. Literally the comment above me when I hit the text box.

lolololol

Also: full agreement with the endorsement.

I also thought Elba's talents were incredibly wasted on Pacific Rim. I'm sure he was tired of Luther (great though it was) but I'm not confident that anything more substantive and Emmy-worthy will come his way in the US.

Re: The Pants Picture, this seems like an appropriate time to link the hilarious "I'm Sorry I'm Not Idris Elba" poem, including his response. It inspired some great tweets, too.

YOU MADE ME WATCH IT and admittedly it was a good decision but you also made me watch Minotaur and for that you are still on notice.

I love that he auditioned for Stringer without letting the casting director know he's a Brit. When they offered him the role they thought his Americanized accent was legit.

Elba was pretty good in Prometheus, unfortunately an awful movie, but and Michael Fassbender has the power to make a whole cast look like "just regular folks."

No lie I forget Elba was even in Prometheus.

No lie I forget Elba was even in Prometheus.

But the Christmas tree! The singing! The shamefully missing sex scene between him and the butch-as-fuck Charlize Theron, which would have melted cinema screens across the world!

Honestly, he's the best part of that film.

THat scene is also shamefully missing from my actual life, it's very upsetting.

Ah, then you never saw him in one of his earliest TV roles.

King of Speed is mediocre in terms of documentaries, but A++++++ in terms of getting to stare at Idris Elba for an extended period of time. I mean, there is that bit in the opening episode where he was driving around his stomping grounds from his teenage days, talking about how he used to pick up a girlfriend that lived just down that way, or how this car was a proper naughty boy car? Also, the part in an episode or two later, where he was slow-rolling through what looked like W1 London while driving a Bugatti Veyron?

(Also, I goddamn loved Idris Elba in Pacific Rim, and am so, so, so glad Tom Cruise turned that role down. YOU CAN ALWAYS FIND ME IN THE DRIFT, etc. )

Able was I ere I saw Idris Elba!

Elba was the best part of Pacific Rim and I loved that movie. I need Idris Elba to be in all media properties I love so that I may love them more. Can Marvel make a Heimdall movie, please? And/or double-cast Elba as Black Panther so that Heimdall and T'Challa can have a buddy-cop-twin-team-up film?
posted by nicebookrack at 11:18 AM on August 8, 2014 [4 favorites]

I really want Isaiah Mustafa as Black Panther though, this is a terrible conundrum.
posted by elizardbits at 11:22 AM on August 8, 2014

Mustafa-T'Challa is acceptable, but Panther/Heimdall team-up badassery is a MUST.

Not many men can pull off a character named Stacker Pentecost. (Or Stringer Bell, for that matter.)

The first entry on a google search of his name is about his dick. I don't know what that says about the world.
Surprisingly, he was in the first season of the Big C as the go to cock.

I like Idris Elba, but this is a pretty thin list. #1 and #7 are "Idris Elba is popular" which isn't exactly news. #8 is having a child. #6 could be a talent if he's actually good at cooking.

There was also the Idris Elba as Doctor Who idea.

Honestly, he's the best part of that film.

Technically, the best part of Prometheus was the clip from Lawrence of Arabia, but only if you edited out the pieces of Prometheus you can see in that scene.

After that, I will grant you, Mr. Elba made the most sense in that he looked convincingly uncomfortable and wishing he was on another planet.

Any chance we could get Irdis Elba as the Doctor and Chiwetel Ejiofor as the Master?

I'd have thought by now he would have done a nude scene that could have settled the issue.

Technically, the best part of Prometheus was the clip from Lawrence of Arabia, but only if you edited out the pieces of Prometheus you can see in that scene.

The best part was walking out afterwards.

I did, in fact, trick elizardbits into that. But to be fair, it was pretty easy to do so as I'm not exactly slick like vasoline.

Irdis Elba as the Doctor and Chiwetel Ejiofor as the Master?

Nope, Patterson James should be the Doctor.
posted by Ik ben afgesneden at 3:27 PM on August 8, 2014

Chiwetel Ejiofor needs to be Black Panther; Isaiah Mustafa apparently really really wants to play Luke Cage and I am 100% in favor of this.

(Also, I want a movie where Lupita Nyong'o plays a brilliant young Interpol agent who always gets her man, and Chiwetel is the suave international art thief whose next big heist...is her heart. While we're at it.)

I love that he auditioned for Stringer without letting the casting director know he's a Brit. When they offered him the role they thought his Americanized accent was legit.

I watched almost the whole series before finding out on some website that he was a Brit. I had no idea. His may be the most perfect American accent I've ever heard a Brit do. And even on The Wire, the other Brits on that show (McNulty, Carcetti) have some pretty sketchy American accents.
posted by zardoz at 4:31 PM on August 8, 2014

The thing I always notice with Brit actors doing an American accent is that, even when they can get the accent down, they can't really act through it. For example, Charlie Hunnam, who was also in Pacific Rim as well as Sons of Anarchy just about always sounds the same, there is never any emotion in his voice.

Idris Elba seems to have conquered that problem.

Hugh Laurie does a good one!

Idris Elba's accent on The Wire was phenomenal. I was blown away when I first heard him speak for real.

And while Mandela was very paint-by-numbers movie, his performance was excellent.

More to the point, I will have to staunchly disagree with those who don't like King of Speed. C'mon, it gave us an episode in Finland where he sits (shirtless and maybe more) in a hot tub drinking red wine with one of Finland's most famous rally drivers... who then offers to give Idris a massage (I mean, who wouldn't?). That was some damn fine television, my friends.

Also, hate on Mumford & Sons all you want, but sometimes it's just soothing to watch Idris Elba race a deer through the countryside and express his manpain.

The bulge was apparently as fake as his American accent, according to his twitter.
