Aphex Twin announces new album SYRO via the deep web! Richard D James uses deep web browser Tor to announce SYRO, his first album since Drukqs in 2001.

Best known for his video Come to Daddy, Richard D James is making his dramatic return to electronic music.

Already, just hours after the announcement several "leaks" of SYRO have popped up. None of which have been official.

Previously.

You've got so many machines, Richard!

1. Minipops 67 = "Manchester track" (confirmed by Warp)
2. XMAS_EVET10 = "Metz track" (speculation only but BPM's and track length matches)

My first exposure to Aphex Twin was Rubber Johnny. I remember it being on some dvd(hell it was probably VHS) that a friend's boyfriend had brought over. The dvd(tape) was some award compilation of some sort of a bunch of different artists from the past year. The one that stuck with me the most of Rubber Johnny (cause holy crap wtf)

A few years later I was trying to remember what that creepy rediculousness was and upon researching it found Windowicker and Come to Daddy.

Now that I type that, the dvd/tape may have contained Windowlicker as well, so maybe it was just an Aphex twin video collection or something.

Either way, James is the textbook example of an eccentric genius and I am stupid excited for this album.

*all the grabby hands*
Long ago in my grad student days I taught Comp I to fresh faced youths who just could not understand parody. The Windowlicker video took care of that right quick.

I'm glad to hear he's doing more than driving his tank around under various pseudonyms. Really excited about this album.

And I said having a party is not my idea of a fantasy, especially right now.

My favourite sample quote in an Aphex track is in Taking Control Of The Drum Machine, where just before a superlative drum freak out, someone, probably AT, drawls "Decent bit", like a horrible parody of the announcer from Tubular Bells.

It's a silly thing to say, completely undercuts any self seriousness the song might have had, and is totally accurate. The next bit really is very decent.

I imagine now I'm somewhere in Britain and suddenly people around me are gasping, looking upwards and pointing. I turn and raise my my gaze to the Aphex Twin blimp and a shuddering sensation overwhelms me. I fall to my knees weeping with joy. It's been too long.

(Later, after a frantic scramble to one or more a music stores and two or three listens over headphones in the dark at whereever I'm staying, when I meet back up with friends I wait like a hungry leopard in a tree near the water. My prey is any mention of the new album, whereupon I pounce to declare, "I've heard it. It's alright, I guess."

The 'leak': minipops sounds nothing like the manchester track, and xmas sounds nothing like the metz track. I call shenanigans!

The key bit of information: "Syro will be released on September 22/23".

twain device - the DVD was likely the director series compilation of director Chris Cunningham's work

Thanks photoslob! Now I have enough data to actually find that thing. I really enjoy the stuff he has done with Aphex Twin/RDJ, so I'd like to see the other videos on that.

Another fun classic Cunningham from the same era is the video for Squarepusher - Come on My Selector

I like this a lot. Very reminiscent of his work (well, probably his work) as The Tuss (e.g.).

Rocketman, the party is your fantasy.

Jon Mitchell: you may be interested to know that the "decent bits" are a sped- and chopped-up reworking of the drums from When The Levee Breaks
