Phil Katz, creator of PKzip, dead at 37.

I heard this earlier - it is deeply saddening. However, he did live to see how widespread his package became and just how useful (and indeed essential) PKZIP was for so many of us.

Was it really necessary to make national news about how badly this guy had sunk? Why shame him and destroy his memory? "knee deep garbage" etc.

DAMN I hate the media. It seems like there is no sense of decorum any more.
