Look Around You

We can take advantage of the dense and real-time nature of our system to perform novel Augmented Virtuality (a.k.a Mixed Reality) interactions... A user can choose a set of planes to alter the original input with an application display, allowing for instance to read a Facebook Wall on a real wall. The user can still safely navigate an environment without fear of collisions and perform tasks like zooming in/out as natural as walking closer/further from surfaces.

Like billboards and ads on every plane surface outside your house wasn't enough.

I couldn't stop think about robot soldiers poking around inside houses, figuring out voids where people could be hiding.

(Kidding aside, the tech looks cool. Also seems to be useful for creating 3D scans of objects)

What was the hardware they were capturing with?

I need one of those.

Looks like an Xtion PRO RGB-D according to the video. MIT has their ATLAS robot doing SLAM with only the stereo cameras (no active IR for the depth channel) so I'd expect this to eventually only require a few cameras instead of a Kinect-like active IR map at some point.

Speaking of ads, I'm getting hungry for some french fries.

oh man this is pretty dang cool! i am so stoked for where this technology will be in 10 years.

I heard somewhere that they pretty much already do all of this with the billboards at hockey and baseball games, is that right? So that ads can be targeted at different markets?

FUTURECOP: So, you didn't see the oncoming semi?

IDIOT DRIVER: Well . . . I . . . I did, that is to say . . . It was there. But I wasn't seeing it. That is-- I mean . . .

FUTURECOP: Slides a flexible OLED display across the table

IDIOT DRIVER: Laughs Oh! That's totally the cat video I was watching on that semi----Oooo . . . I mean . . .

FUTURECOP: You can use our blank wall to Google lawyers.

Yeah but there will be an app to overlay those billboards and logos with uh, nice photos of nature or something. So in the grand scheme of things it evens out.

Have you worked out what we're looking for yet? Correct. It's Calcium.

Thanks, griphus. Thaphus.
