I always broke down the three Iron Man films like so:

1) Iron Man vs. Mechanical Man
2) Iron Men vs. Mechanical Men
3) Bunch of different Iron Men vs. Fire People

For that reason, I kinda liked the third one most because it created some interesting scenarios. With the villain here being more damned mechanical men, I hope they can figure out a way to mix it up a bit more. (Disclaimer: I have read zero of the comics, so I'm in the dark as to how these story lines did/could play out.)

Iron Man and Hulk are fighting in this movie, and Captain America 3 will purportedly be a version of Civil War. That gives me reason to think that this movie will end with Tony Stark shooting the Hulk off into space, and that a Planet Hulk movie is right around the corner. Marvel's being cagey about their future movies. This strategy makes sense if Planet Hulk is upcoming. They can't announce Planet Hulk until after Avengers 2 is released, because it would be a spoiler.

Quicksilver and the Scarlett Witch are the weird overlapped part of the Venn diagram that is Marvel movie rights. As I understand it, they can appear in both X-Men and 'other-Marvel' movies, but it appears that certain things, eg the word "mutant" to describe superheroes, are off-limits in MCU properties. World War Hulk would make for a really fun Avengers movie. Hulk should be a sympathetic bad guy half of the time, and we've only really seen good Hulk. All of the Avengers and SHIELD trying to take down a Hulk bent on destroying them: that'd be good stuff. The problem is that if they do both Planet Hulk and WWH is that they'd need to do both of them before the Infinity Gauntlet, and that's almost certainly the next huge crossover event.

I don't think we're in danger of a Civil War storyline, so much of that is predicated on Superheros being a THING and not a recent phenomenon and the Avengers being around for more than, what? a year? And being more tight with each other than "people I am willing to stand if the world is literally ending".

It seems much more likely we're moving toward a focus on the Marvel Cosmic universe, superheros IN SPAAAAAACE, hell even Dr. Strange makes more sense there. Ultron is another in a long line of Thantos puppets.

Of course I'm still expecting a full on Invasion of The Body Snatchers/Secret Invasion thing to go down cause it would fit so many of the movies' in the MCU's various themes.

I think some head honchos have outright said that Cap 3 is going to be a version of Civil War? It's not clear exactly how that's going to work. It's probably gonna be Cap vs. Stark, with all the heroes falling behind one or the other, but the issue causing the fallout won't be superhero registration: it'll be surveillance or something like that. Rumors are swirling that Cap will "die" and be replaced with Falcon for a while, but I don't know the reliability of any of this. There's probably none whatsoever.

In the comics, Bucky has become a spaceman superspy, so I'm guessing he'll be joining the GotG in their next movie. Or he'll be their enemy or competitor or something.

There's been no official confirmation that Civil War is happening in the movies. There was a report in Variety that cited no sources and had no quotes, not even from unnamed people "familiar with the matter." But it wasn't flatly denied, which is all it takes to turn a sketchy report into news stories and then into accepted fact ( and then into disappointment when the subject of the rumor doesn't do the thing they were never planning on doing in the first place).

I'm not saying it's not going to be Civil War, I'm just saying that it's not a lock either.

Also, Netflix has the animated version of Planet Hulk, and it's pretty good for what it is. It will definitely pass the time if you have a lot of laundry to fold.

For the record, I REALLY don't want a movie version of Civil War, AKA the storyline that made me actively loathe Tony Stark for years, until said loathing was only quelled by Robert Downey Jr Tony (whom it will cause me physical pain to hate).

That said, I can still definitely see how Civil War could play out with Bruce Banner / Hulk in the pivotal Spider-Man role: Tony's good friend who's rightfully wary of government control and turns to Steve / against Tony for it.

THAT said, Civil War would still be a waste this early. There's no point in the OMG DRAMA of tearing apart the Great Captain America / Iron Man Bromance when MCU Steve/Tony just barely achieved the "grudgingly don't hate you" early stage of friendship.

I dunno, I like Civil War a lot more than other people seem to, but I read it in the spirit of a What If. It gets a lot of characters wrong, but so does that What If where Wolverine becomes king of the vampires and kills most of the MU, and that story rules.

Wait, Civil War is the next storyline?

But isn't the MCU US government, like laughably incompetent? I mean, they can't control/handle ANY of the Avengers, they needed a billionaire with an advanced toy to "privatize world peace", and even their national security jewel in the crown (SHIELD), was, pretty much totally infiltrated by HYDRA.

It would be to the point where if they started a super hero registration program, it would make HEALTH.GOV'S launch look like the New Deal.

I can just imagine the FBI looking up HULK's address and finding out he lives at 123 Fake Street.

Man, it's amazing how much stuff seems obviously set up for the MCU now.

From the trailer, it looks like they'll be doing something akin to the first half of Planet Hulk. It'll probably be early in the film so Ultron can blindside everyone in the second act, as well as take Banner off the board for dealing with him (is there anyone left in MCU in Tony's league intellectually? We don't have Reed or even Pym in this universe yet.)

So then we're set after this to do Civil War for Cap 3. That actually works perfectly because it doesn't have to follow the plotline at all either. It just needs Steve and Tony to be in opposite camps of an important issue. CW was just a broad allegory anyway where Speedball = 9/11 and Registration = The War on Terror(tm). Plus *REDACTED* dies at the end and that seems to line up nicely with a certain someone's contract issues.

After that they can callback on Planet Hulk. Again, they don't have to do the book plotline and have space gladiators. I think the crux of it will be Hulk 2 is a Cosmic adventure, with him returning to earth either at the end of his movie or (more likely) at the beginning of Avengers 3. While he's in space they'll probably have him interact with Thanos, crossover with GotG, or both.

Oh, and we also now have an MCU with both Vision and Scarlet Witch so clearly some version of House of M is bound to happen. Plus even with all this we're still nowhere near assembling the Infinity Gauntlet.

I don't think this will ever really happen. Sony will literally never relinquish Spider-Man, it's why they churn out a crappy Amazing Spider-Man movie every few years. There's a statute of limitations on the rights and if they let it lay fallow, they revert back to Marvel. The X-Men are in better shape createively, but ... still.

Honestly, I think it's been good for Marvel because they couldn't coast on the fact that (at least as far as I know) Spider-Man and the X-Men were much bigger name characters back when Marvel was getting MCU off the ground. And certainly the other studios' movies would be declared non-canon immediately and ignored. They don't fit the house style. They'd also have to deal with awkward questions about "what has Spider-Man been doing all this time. Why didn't anyone noticed all these people-we-couldn't-call-mutants running around?"

Is this just fantasy?

I know it was a derail from way back in the thread, but I've thought for a long time that Mr Miracle could be the thing for DC. Partly because it really should be fun (the back story for Scott and Barda is, after all, that they're refugees from a regime where they were subjected as children to unimaginable cruelty and abuse - they wouldn't need the front of the movie to be dark with that there), partly because very few people even think they know what Mr Miracle should be like, so the film makers can do what they want (that was the advantage that Marvel had with Iron Man - if you read comic books you knew about Iron Man, but otherwise not, so they were free to take the bits they liked and discard the rest - DC's problem is the expectations that people have of the Big Three, or at least the Big Two they've made films of so far); partly because you could cast Helen Mirren as Granny Goodness, which is something that ought to happen in a rational universe.

I mean if DC really did want to annoy Marvel, they could aim to get a Darkseid-villained New Gods movie out there before Thanos features in Avengers 3. Though in order to work it would have to be at least not-bad, so it's not likely.

Oh, and I'd hoped that James Spader would play Ultron as a slightly fey, creepy geek type like Sex Lies and Videotape or Secretary, so very slightly disappointed.

There are rumors that Hank Pym used to work with SHIELD and maybe Tony will base Ultron in part on old Pym tech from the '60s-'70s, since Michael Douglas Pym will be in Ant-Man, also out in 2015. But so far, only rumors.

The problem with Civil War is the most interesting part of it involves Spider-Man and it requires a lot more masked heroes around to work. Even if you throw in the Defenders and the AoS heroes there aren't that many.

I really, really hope they kill Tony or convert him to supervillain or something because I really feel like he's limiting what can be done with the MCU with his wit and charisma making things always about him (especially since Whedon is kind of shit at writing Cap, so Stark becomes the default lead). Kill him and replace him on the team with Rescue, it'll be great.

They can adapt Civil War the same way they did Extremis: not literally/totally faithfully, but they can introduce the core of government action driving a wedge between the heroes. Given that Marvel has said they want to shake up the Avengers lineup down the road, this is a good way to do that and let Downey and the Chrises go on to other things.

It's the obvious play, really. Groundwork's laid in the first Avengers movie and Cap 2, and distrust of government and the M/I complex is becoming a thing in the MCU. Now Tony making Iron Automatons and Ultron in the wake of his early drunken recklessness and PTSD is going to strain the team's trust in him even more. Come Cap 3, kaboom.

You lose the Spider-Man stuff, but that means you also lose that deal-with-the-devil horseshit. Frankly Civil War could use a rewrite, Spidey or no Spidey. I hope they try it. Lord knows they've had unlikely successes before.

That pissed me off so much.

To be fair, DC fucked that up in the comics first. Waller 2.0 as sexy lady is now considered canon, gag.

it's disappointing to see they made her skinny.

It's not just the fact that they made Amanda Waller skinny, it's that she's also played by a supermodel-pretty 29-year-old, apparently for CW youth-appeal reasons. I enjoy Arrow quite a bit, but my disbelief doesn't quite suspend with their version of Waller. The whole point of her character in the pre-New 52 comics is that she's a non-conventionally superheroic (overweight, middle-aged, non-glamorous) woman who by sheer force of intellect and determination has made herself and her organization into a force that can bring demigods to heel.

Back on the main topic, the Avengers trailer was pretty neat. I don't see why people are complaining about not getting to see anything cool. If you compare this teaser to the original Captain America post-credits teaser for the first film -- which consisted of a bunch of fast cuts of characters we'd already seen, and zero sense of story -- this thing is a smorgasbord.

GodDAMN, do I hate the Nu52 revision of Amanda Waller. I'm not even a big "Suicide Squad" fan, I'm just a huuuuge fan of the scene in "Justice League Unlimited" where Batman and Waller get into a staredown, him backed up by the League, her backed up by the frickin' army, and he smirks, "Mine are bigger than yours!"
And she backs down, but then makes it clear with a single phrase that she's only backing down because the winning move that she's keeping in her pocket, the next step in the escalation, is the one that will ruin him. Awesome.

And it's such a great, specific characterization that she had in that show. I don't know how the comic book version compared, but replacing her with Yet Another Supermodel sucks enormously.

On "Age of Ultron": can't wait. I am so very much in the bag for the MCU at this point that I don't even talk about it to other people because hoo boy can I get tedious on the subject. But I will say this about the trailer: I like the whole "no strings" motiff that they're establishing for Ultron, his harping on his unexpected autonomy, because the MCU version of Tony Stark is a goddamn control freak underneath all that enormous wit and charisma, and also currently a control freak with the complication of PTSD. He's such a control freak that he's already built a suit particularly to take down his best buddy.

A villain that grows from his designs, or more specifically, one that outgrows his designs, is a great choice. And the fallout from this story could easily give rise to an MCU version of "Civil War" if Stark's response to these events is to attempt even more control. Because Natasha and Steve, as we've already seen in "Winter Soldier", won't go along with that.

It would also solve the problem of how to integrate these other characters. They "revert" back to a universe where they've always existed and are already integrated. They don't (and shouldn't) use House of M directly, but it could be about the Avengers figuring out something is wrong with their world, finding some way to "revert" it to its true form, and finding it to be a plot of Doom or something using Wanda to erase his enemies and now that they've defeated him the universe is "right" again and we have everyone.

That a ton of Marvel "Unknown Movies" on that graphic. Are those placeholders for re-boots of previous movies that, for whatever reason, don't fit the universe now?

My laman's understanding:

This is pretty standard (at least for Marvel, I dunno about other studios). Marvel's been regularly releasing two movies a year for the last I forget how long. There's been talk, I think, of moving to three even.

The tentative release dates are announced well in advance. What the movies are actually going to be aren't announced until they're greenlit because they like to have some flexibility and choice without annoying people by announcing tentative projects only to shelve them. Enough of that happens already and people get upset. We'll know what those are closer to their release dates. They have a stack of projects they could do and a vague outline of the overall crazy plan[1], publicly committing to doing one is a big deal so they're not in a hurry.

[1] - I can't find the interview, but I read one a while back with the head of Marvel's movie production wing that talked about him having a rough timeline for where MCU is going in the next decade or so mapped out on his wall.

A Hawkeye show or movie, based on Fraction's take on the character, would indeed kick multiple varieties of ass. And I think maybe "show" would be the better of the two options. The budget constraints of a Netflix show might actually force bettter conformance to the tone of the material.

Going by a Buzzfeed interview IIRC Arrow actually has a relatively tight budget, which is why they film in Canada and choreograph all the fight scenes so they don't have to CGI things.

And going by another article of unknown provenance I will dig up when I'm not on my phone, IIRC Renner is actually the (kinda) highest-earning Avengers actor, strictly based on the box office success of the movies he's been in (The Hurt Locker, The Town, American Hustle, Missions Impossible, etc.) I doubt that correlates on a 1:1 basis with his personal salary, though.

Renner is also part of an EXTREMELY lucrative house restoration and flipping business in Beverly Hills -- I do sometimes wonder why he bothers acting, so maybe if he's upset with Hawkeye getting a short shift he can help fund a Hawkguy 12-episode Netflix thing.

Finally got around to watching this and I am delighted.

It's a good teaser, while illustrating the similarities and growth of the team, as seen from the first Avenger's trailer. Both start off with things going explody and the world being at stake. But AoU doesn't have to worry about introducing us to the characters and take pains to note that the team might be coming apart.

Whedon make a point of saying that this Avengers would differ in tone from the original and it's a good choice, IMO. While the Marvel movies have been quite enjoyable, there is certain sameness to them and changes to them would be helpful As an older guy, who's seen his fair share of moves and is a little jaded with the story and character tropes, I'm particularity pleased that Ultron comes off FUCKING terrifying. Seriously, that jilted puppet like walk is deliciously creepy, while the final shot of the trailer shows something you definitely don't want come across, ever. Damn fine job.

Various notes: I don't think that's Tony Stark in the HulkBuster armor, probably an Ultron controlled IronMan suit. When the Hulkbuster appears, Hulk seems to be working with the local police force to defeat something else.

Seems like it's just a matter of when, not if, in terms of a Black Panther movie.

Love how it's clear that there's still so much more to the story i.e. the lack of appearance by a certain confirmed person.

I'm guessing the twins were experimented upon, hence why they might be hanging out with Ultron for a bit, before seemingly teaming up with the Avengers.

Hey War Machine, how YOU doing?

Tony Stark getting depressed about creating Ultron could perfectly explain why Robert Downey wouldn't be in an Iron Man 4 or there simply won't be a movie.

I'm not sure if I have posted this before, but my parents LOVE Marvelverse movies, despite having never read a single comic based on any of the properties. When a trailer is released, I await the inevitable phone call as my mom wants to know the lowdown for whatever film. When IM3 was released, there was a SERIOUS ten minute phone call about the mental health of Tony Stark. My mom, in all earnestness, was like, "It looks like Tony is going to have some tough times. But I really believe he'll pull through."

So at some point this afternoon, I will have to explain Ultron and the twins and what Tony's mental health might be like. (Also, she will want to discuss Thor, but only because she really likes Chris Hemsworth's arms.)

Theory for how AoU goes down, based only on seeing the trailer:

Tony develops the IronMan suits for IM3 to be sort of Avengers, so this police force can operate on a global scale, in multiple countries at once. This would put an end to the Avengers, so to speak (He says something about Ultron is his fault for developing the end of the road for them). One gains sentience and decides it's going to take over everyone, the old "i'm not gonna be the servant, but the master" schtick.

That's who is in the Hulkbuster armor, attacking the Hulk. The Avengers defeat him, but at great cost to Banner (he loses control?), but since Ultron is digital, he comes back at the celebration party (seen in the trailer in the busted armor) threatens them all and takes off, works on building copies himself. Tries to recruit the twins, they're down with that, since they were tortured/experimented on. Meanwhile the Avengers are searching for something to help them defeat Ultron, perhaps Loki's staff or The Diviner from Agents of Shield. Also, Jarvis, Tony's computer lab assistant, develops into the Vision, to help out Tony. The twins decide Ultron is fucking nuts and sides with the Avengers

Then...something, something...moving to the all out battle at the end.

Big wish:
Cap gets "killed" in Cap 3, Peggy Carter takes some of the serum that has kept Dr. Whitehall from Agents of Shield looking so young since WWII, then her and Steve retire to the country and Bucky takes over the mantle of Captain America.
posted by Brandon Blatcher at 5:17 PM on October 24, 2014 [1 favorite]

then her and Steve retire to the country and Bucky takes over the mantle of Captain America.

So, the ending to Batman 3, then?
I was largely with you until that point. Although I think Ultron will build Vizh, as per the comics because he wants a son.

Didn't we see Peggy die in Winter Soldier? Or at least very aged?

(And, speaking of Peggy, we have her show between now and Avengers. I'm hoping it's as awesome as her one-shot... and nothing like her comic. That Man On The Wall Stuff is silly).
