Chocolate Smoke Persian Sugartump Supremo Disaronno

Hello. This year's Supreme Cat Show is taking place in Birmingham, England. The one-day show is one of the largest cat fancy competitions in Europe with over one thousand cats being exhibited. Observe Norwegian Forest Cat 'Kattjeules Tinkerbell', while Kirsty, who was at the event showing her Persian cat, said grooming the long-haired cat to get him show-ready was a lot of work and takes 20-30 minutes a day. In 2011 the process paid of for Mrs Murray and her moggie Mr Bojangles (whose show name is “Imperial Grand Premier & Supreme Kitten Isadoryou Mr Bojangles”) won the kitten category.

Isn't it about time we had a MeFi cat show? Say three pictures each on a MeTa thread, volunteer mod or other MeFite 'face' to judge. Categories for handsomest, cutest, most three legged ( open to suggestions). Rosette for homepage?

Cat shows are amazing.

Cat shows are extra amazing when Walter Hutzler is one of the judges.

Doesn't 800 cats in a room stress them out and traumatise them massively?

I can see that dogs are OK with shows, but cats are territorial predators that basically exist to stake out their space.

louche mustachio's link has an autoplaying Flash video-and-audio ad, the presence of which puts a site instantly on my rage list.

?

It didn't autoplay for me, I'm sorry about that. I hate it too.

Walter Hutzler is still wonderful though, and if you ever do find yourself at a cat show and he is one of the judges you will be highly entertained and will learn a lot about cats.

Wasn't meaning to accuse you or say you shouldn't have linked it. It's just, when a site does that, I feel strongly that it's broken a contract with the reader, and it needs to be called out for it.

I think I'd much rather watch the 'cats puking to techno' video on YouTube.

This year's overall champion, awarded the title of Supreme Exhibit, was Premier Pinemarten Tina Sparkle (pictured below), a British Lilac Tortie

That was unexpected.

I wish the fads for squished-face breeds of cats and dogs would end; it's not good for the animals and they make those gross wheezing noises.

But the capsule descriptions in the BBC piece are cute and the cats are clearly well-loved (perhaps overly loved in some cases, looking at their expressions). The lead poisoning one looked like he might still be feeling some effects, though I'm happy for his recovery.

Yes, there are a lot of problems with certain "purebreds", including sinus problems in Persians and osteodystrophy in Scottish Folds.

The standards for a breed change over time, and the interests of an extreme look don't always favor the health of the cat.

After this bruising MeTa thread, and the feeling to do something positive (partially in atonement), will put in writing here. If there is such a cat show as outlined by biffa, I will donate to MetaFilter 50 cents per MeFite who posts their cat pictures (living or historical, the latter of which could be another category?) as an entry on it, up to a cap of $50 US.

I would pay to enter my fur kid in a mefi cat show.

Attention everyone: Entering the MeFi Cat Show would be a waste of time. My cat would win. My cat came from Saudi Arabia.

I would think cats that have been dragged to shows since they were kittens are acclimated to it.* Judging from the local shows, many owners make an effort to keep the cats chill, covering their cages for instance.

I would enter a MeFi cat show with my plain-joe orange kitty. He wouldn't win, but he is still the Best. Cat. EVAR!

*Dog knows the cats my kids had would put up with anything, from being dressed up to hauled to school in a backpack. The majority of my cats have lived with the dogs (and like them, to a certain catly degree.)

I did attend a show once, out of curiosity, and the cats were all perfectly calm, just chilling in their cages. However, most of the cages were set up so that the cats couldn't see each other, and the owners were nearby.

I've had a few cats who would do well in a cat show. (All long-haired fat males.) Currently I have cats who . . . wouldn't. Yes, that's a fair way to put it.

The way they throw around the words "Supreme" and "Premier" reminds me so much of the Ku Klux Klan, but they follow them with "Lilac" and "Sparkle". It leaves me very confused.

Premier is a special class for cats that have been "fixed." Normally, show cats have to be breedable.

Vague is singing the praises of a MeFi cat show. None of the cats will have as fine a moustache as a friend of mine's cat, Stache.

If the owner of this cat is a mefite, we may as well just declare them the winner right now.

Princess and Betty are annoyed at the idea that they would have to compete with other, lesser cats.
