Almost a year into Mefi, I'm still not sure if I've ever had pancakes in my life. I know I've had what the French call "blinis," which are pancake-like, but I doubt that counts. Nor do potato pancakes count. Chalk it up to being a New York Jew with a mom who has always worked for Weight Watchers. Oh, woe is me!

Perhaps the next NYC Mefi meet could be at a pancake-enabled restaurant?

I've seen this advertised on TV, and all I can say is if you are unable to make a simple pancake, you have no business getting near a stove.

Real men eat waffles, anyway.

Mmmmm. Waffles. With Quebec maple syrup. Mmmmm.

Didn't Kiev close down? Of course, I'm thinking potato pancakes ... at 4 am ...

Damn I miss Manhattan. :::sigh:::

The Odessa still does good potato pancakes at 4am in Manhattan's East Village, but it's time to get with the rösti, people!

The best pancakes I've ever had are the Silver Dollar Pancakes from Jimmy Bean's in Berkeley on 6th Street. They're light, fluffy, and adorably tiny. You get two stacks of six mini-pancakes in a half order, but only three stacks of six in a full order...thankfully it's so good you forget about the math. Served with pure maple syrup & fresh seasonal fruit on the side. Yum!

Far be it for me to blaspheme traditions, but isn't the pancake thing getting old? Can't we have a new in-joke instead, and maybe let the pancakes rest a little? They are tired and want night night.

"If you gave to me all the gold in the the world,
I'd say 'no-de-no-de-no no!'
Cuz I'd rather have the taste of waffles
Than all of the gold in the world!
Those little griddle breakfast cakes,
Fresh or frozen - toaster baked!
I'd eat as many as I can make;
I love the taste of waffles!!"

Kiev re-opened briefly as "Zoo" (huh?), but have now gone back to the original name and roughly the original menu. However, the charmingly grimy back room is gone for good, I'm afraid.

I don't think it's possible. Over on FreeRepublic the exact same tradition has evolved for derailing silly threads, except over there it's cheese instead of pancakes. Some people got bored with the cheese and tried to start making it about mooseheads or something, but it doesn't seem to have really caught on.

Perhaps we could try replacing pancakes with cheese here, though: It would go great with the whine this thread has produced in Metatalk.

This is utter insanity. Every pancake is already perfect. You're telling me I won't be getting any more of those mutant pancakes joined together like best buddies, or those darling 1/2" mini pancakes that you save for last because they're so cute? Cooking pancakes in the pan, watching the batter form a unique and individual pancake is the second best thing about pancakes. I am telling you to go to hell, Merchant Media Inc. We don't need any more damned TV kitchen gadgets, especially a "No-drip batter dispencer" [sic]. This reminds me of those slotted trays you were supposed to put potato slices and bacon in so you could cook them in the microwave. It's supposed to be a time saver but you spent all that time getting messy slippery bacon strips into individual slots and microwave bacon has nothing on cooked bacon. Non-microwaved/slotted cooked bacon is also excellent with pancakes.

OH PANCAKES!

FRENCH TOAST. Screw pancakes. Denny's makes 'em the best, followed by IHOP. French toast, I mean.

The best pancakes in the whole wide world are to be found in Austin, TX, at Kerby Lane.

Just thinking about them makes me drool.

SO, all you SWSXers, get thee to Kerby Lane. Seriously.
