Céline Unveils Its Latest Poster Girl: Joan Didion [New York Times]
“I don’t have any clue,” said the 80-year-old author of well-thumbed classics such as “The White Album,” “Slouching Towards Bethlehem” and “The Year of Magical Thinking,” reached by telephone on Wednesday at her Upper East Side residence (where the photo, by Juergen Teller, was taken). “I have no idea.” Whose idea was this? “They got in touch with me,” Ms. Didion said, as crisp as one of Phoebe Philo’s cotton tunics."

"And now let’s talk about Céline’s just-debuted ad campaign featuring French dancer Marie-Agnes Gillot, model Freya Lawrence, and none other than immortal intellectual-and-otherwise dream girl Joan Didion." [Vogue]

I thought this was going to be about Louis-Ferdinand Celine. It works for him too.

I'm sorry, but I hate Céline Didion. I don't care how popular she is in Canada. Wait, what?

My favourite Didion is Packing-List Didion.

My real peeve isn't pictures of celebrities, but that harsh flash photography style that's all the rage these days, especially when the victim is angled just right so that you can see up her nose, brightly lit all the way up into her sinuses. Gross.

Didion, Trotsky, there's something to be said for trying to live up to one's reputation.

At least it was Juergen Teller they sent to photograph her, and not Terry Richardson.

Is it just me, or does the woman in the picture on the left look like she's just stood up from squatting near that tree to pee? There is something hopelessly glamourous about attending a party where you wear red platform heels but pee in the bushes.

Céline Didion would be a great name for an impersonator/tribute one-woman-band.years

Or a great Metafilter username. Just saying.

yea, um, seriously. this is a really low-risk "risky" thing to do. it's an absolute publicity stunt, almost perfectly targeted at the type of bloggers who will repost going "omg you go girl!".

this is a lot more pepsi blue than a powerful statement of any kind.

At least it was Juergen Teller

Oh that explains why I thought it was a Marc Jacobs ad.

If Joan Didion is happy, I am happy. At this point, when anything happens that means Joan Didion has had a nice moment in her day, I'm pleased for her.

And it is very easy to sit where you sit and take the piss -- "oh yeah, she's old, it's a total publicity stunt" -- but whatever. The magazines outside of the AARP basically never show women over the age of 50 basically never, so it is surprising and interesting to some of us.
