I would be way too afraid of poking my eye out. I mean my real eye.

It kind of fails because big anime eyes belong to wide-headed young characters who have their eyes placed more or less in the middle of the head like children do (informative LJ source post, too), while older characters have more realistic-looking and realistically-placed eyes.

Head proportions are explained in every "how to draw manga" book but here you have a chart, for example.

(Although probably you can do a perfect Sailormoon Crystal cosplay like that /rimshot)

^If you buy a book with that art on the cover, shame on you :P

huh, flashbacks to several MAC shades I used to use!

(fun protip: dip an angle brush in a tiny amount of unscented skin lotion, then in Carbon. You get the effect of liquid liner without the worry of your hand shaking at the wrong moment)

Who thought the uncanny valley lay in the hollow of an eye?

Doesn't it also fail because you can't, you know, have your own eyes open? You might as well color an eyeshade.

Adult eyes are also in the middle of the head. They're just smaller, proportionately, because a person's eyes grow almost not at all in their lifetime, whereas a person's head grows slightly more than that. But it's not as if the eye sockets shift position. In that respect, drawing eyes above one's eyes doesn't really work, no, but that can easily be rectified by making the top half of the head seem larger by poofing the hair up.

What does help in drawing convincing anime eyes on your face is not having the prominent brows and sunken eyes of Cro-Magnon like I do. *sigh*

Please don't assume every Draw Manga book describes proper proportions.

Please don't assume every Draw Manga book describes proper proportions.

During my exchange student days in Japan, while I was still in art school, I once demonstrated Leonardo da Vinci's proportion system for the human face and eyes to some Japanese people. It's very accurate. I drew a portrait of one of them, and explained the system as I drew. They all said the eyes looked too small.

mccarty.tim's find nearly edges out the subject of the FPP. I mean, is that girl's face melting?

Man, someone needs to show this to Lady Gaga. Every time I see an image or video of her from that press conference with those so-called "anime eyes" I need to constantly remind myself that they're supposed to look like eyes, as opposed to what they actually look like: someone wearing heavy eye shadow, with their eyes closed, resolutely not looking like eyes, anime or otherwise.

So, no word on the why?

Because we can, and it's fun, so nyah.

Seriously thought, I wonder how effective this sort of thing might be at throwing off any currently-deployed facial-recognition software. If we're going to live in a cruel post-cyberpunk dystopia, we might as well have the eyes for it.
