Theatre should be written on water.

This is an awesome attitude. Back when I was involved in theater, it took me a really long time to wrap my head around the fact that the ephemeral nature of the performance was a feature, not a bug that was taken really seriously by everyone involved. The idea that all this work goes into something that will be gone forever, save perhaps a single, likely poor-quality, archival video that will be tightly controlled forever, was really hard to swallow.
While I sometimes enjoy seeing clips of performances on YouTube that audience members have surreptitiously shot on their cell phones, I also know it's likely not what the actors and creative team want, for reasons that go far deeper than union rules and copyright issues.
