Wow, did not even know that was a thing.

I've never even heard of this kind of behavior in dogs. I can't even imagine the purpose it serves.

What's most interesting about this to me, is that even though the video starts out showing cats tormenting dogs, thus implying that sitting on the cat is revenge, it doesn't look like that's what's happening. It looks like the dogs are actually trying to sit on the cats' laps.

Seems to me the only thing worse than having a cat claw your face would be having a cat claw your nads. But I am not a dog, nor will I critique The Inscrutable Doggy Wisdom.

Some of these seem like aggressive action on the part of the dog. Others seem like the dog just doesn't know where it's ass is.

Dominance display.

I dunno almost all of these show a deliberate butt twirl aimed at sitting on the cat. What I can't figure out is if it's meant to be a dominant or submissive gesture, or what normal dog interaction it's supposed to be (do dogs do that to each other?)

It's a way to hold the cat still so you can (play) bite it.

Here is the Huffington Post copy. Hopefully that'll work cross borders.

You'd think there would be a super quick learning process after the first moment that the cat decided to deploy its teeth.

(do dogs do that to each other?)

According to pictures I've seen on the Other (i.e. non-cat-centric) Internet, yes they do.

I'm in the UK and the video works fine for me.

I thought the sad music would stop as soon as the B&W pictures turned colour and something upbeat would take its place. Yakkety Yak opportunity missed.

I love how every cat's reaction to this is "Oh my god, that is disgusting, you are so gross, what is WRONG with you?" much like a little sister's response to an older brother farting on her.

Oh God. I have not lol'ed so hard at an animal video in a long time. The dachshund poking its butt at the much larger cat was my favourite, but they were all pretty hilarious. So many of them seem to hover over the cat's face, wiggle their butt, and then lower it slowly--quite the technique.

So one day, Sebby, the 32lb. 38" long Ragdoll rolled up to the sofa, where the dog was curled up sleeping. The sofa extended well past the dog on either side - they could both share the sofa comfortably. And in fact, had done just that many times in the past.

This day, however, was not those days. Sebby sized up the situation, and he decided that he was going to lay on the sofa, and he was going to jump on the sleeping dog do it.

It ended predictably - a brief blender of fur, and Sebby ran off to hide upstairs - the dog did that circle thing on his spot, and settled back in with sigh. When next we meet Sebby - he was lighter by one half of his left ear. I think the dog ate it.

I wanted to feel bad for Sebby, but really - he had it coming.

They do this to puppies too. I think its a way to contain without harming

I've seen something similar between my two dogs. After adopting the big newfie-lab-whatever mix, a 3 year-old Australian shepherd came into the house a couple of months later. The dogs squabbled constantly for a few weeks. Lots of barking and growling and face-biting. The newfie-lab thought since she was bigger, she should get everything first and the aussie would just have to live with it.

The aussie was a master of the long game, so she let the big dog get away it for the moment. But as soon as the big dog had sacked out on the pillow, the aussie would walk over to her and wake her up by sitting on the dog's face and making a humping motion. Which made the big dog furious, and the growling and face-biting would go on for another hour.

This is the same aussie who would cheat the big dog out of her treats. When both dogs would get a bone, the aussie would hide hers and then go out on the deck and bark at absolutely nothing. Big dog would drop her bone and investigate, and the aussie would run back in and eat big dog's treat. Big dog never figured it out.

Note the inevitable cat jujitsu by the end where the cats have turned this move against the dogs and thereby used it to conquer their oppressors/friends.

Needs a better soundtrack. I thought of this.

I don't care how much the cat deserves it, I would never put my crotch in that much danger.

These dogs are clearly trying to mark the cats with their anal glands, which they use to mark their territory as well as their shit -- and their territory with their shit, of course -- and it's hard for me to believe there isn't an overtone of 'you don't amount to shit' when they're doing it to cats or each other.

I love how every cat's reaction to this is "Oh my god, that is disgusting, you are so gross, what is WRONG with you?" much like a little sister's response to an older brother farting on her.

Human beings also have anal glands, according to the Wikipedia article I link above, though they're internal.

For dogs they apparently don't mature until puberty in some cases, and my recollection is that there was quite a bit more pungent farting among boys, and maybe greater frequency, right around puberty too -- but I'm not sure I can bring myself to even think about the possibility of pheromones in farts.

When I worked in a photo store, one of my favorites was of a dog resting its head on a cat, and the cat looking like it's in the middle of waking up in a state of confusion.

Our 15-lb Chihuahua mix really likes to sit on us. (Not on our heads, blessedly. Just our laps. And our chests. And our backs. And any other parts of us with less than a 7% grade). Mr. Palmcorder has always suspected it was a dominance thing, and I kept saying, no, no, it's just adorableness and cuddles and pure, sweet, 'huahua love-- but now I'm thinking. . . maybe not?
