RIP Monty Oum

On January 31st, Burnie Burns of Rooster Teeth posted that animator Monty Oum was in critical condition after a minor medical procedure, and that he might not recover. Yesterday it was announced that he had died. He was 33 years old.

Exactly what happened is unknown at this time.

Besides Haloid, Dead Fantasy and RWBY, he also worked on seasons 8 and 9 of Red vs. Blue.

The RT team had their podcast last night, and at the end of it, played this tribute to him.

If you're unfamiliar with his work in the art of machinma, please view these:

Haloid (Samus Aran vs. the Master Chief
Dead Fantasy 1 (Dead or Alive vs Final Fantasy)
RWBY episode 1

My daughter is a major Rooster Teeth fan, and was very much broken up over his death. It's a tragic loss of a talented young man.

I remember discovering Monty and scouring the Internet for any more samples of his work. He was an astonishing animator and had so much left to do.

Long time fan. This is an incredibly tragic loss.

This is what I'd suggest to introduce people: RWBY "Red" Trailer.

Or possibly the cafeteria food fight.

I wasn't a RWBY fan, but the number of people it made so happy was undeniable, and I love new media success stories. What a sad, sad loss.

I wish I could animate this dot for him, but I can't.

In addition to the above (Haloid was where I first found him), he was responsible for the combat system/animations for Afro Samurai, which became the Zandatsu 'free slice' mechanic seen in Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance.
