I don't think that it's necessarily a red/blue state divide that is keeping people away from different movies so much as it's the fact that a ticket is way more expensive than it used to be.

But remember, winning an Oscar is a lot about campaigning and showing up at the right parties and kissing the right asses.

Also, the people who decide the Oscars are mostly white, old, men, so.....

The most trenchant take on awards I've read recently was done by, wait for it, Morrissey. He seriously lays it down.

The Oscars are a screener to pirate delivery protocol.

That's it for me. A night at the movies for me and my wife can easily run in the neighbourhood of $50 these days. You gotta be pretty picky about what you watch at that price. For that same money we can stream something on Netflix while eating filet mignon and roasted brussels sprouts and drinking wine. And I get to do all that in my drawers in the comfort of my own home.

I expect they 'mean' the same to that insane marketing machine in LA that also has a production division. Probably more people watched the televised ceremony than ever saw most any particular film. It is interesting that there has always been a proclivity to honor "important" films compared to the biggest money makers, but that's an element of the overall marketing strategy.

Per waxy's annual analysis: not really, and especially not now: "Screeners aren’t leaking because they don’t matter anymore."
