I think the Hertzfeldt Simpson's intro offered more insight than the video in the Verge link.

Oh man. Can't wait.

Just watched It's Such A Beautiful Day recently and I don't know that I have the words to adequately describe it, but it broke both my brain and my heart.

"It's Such a Beautiful Day" tapped so perfectly into my deep-rooted existential terror and obsessive fear of death that I found it almost unbearable to watch. But in a good way.

Yeah, not many stick-figure animations have moved me to tears, but ISABD really hit the spot, hard.

I was about to say the same thing, grumpybear. ISABD is a gut-punch of a movie. I don't understand how a movie about stick figures can be so deeply affecting.

One wonderful thing about video-on-demand is suddenly audiences are able to watch movies that aren't the standard 1.5-2.5 hour length. I've been to some short film festivals before, but you generally had to be in a big town at the right place to watch such things.

I look forward to it.

Don Hertzfeldt's The End of the World was my favourite christmas gift last year.

(yes, I bought it to myself)

That was badly done. Three seconds film, three seconds to read a superlative critique. There was no excerpt that would make me want to see the film? (And I like Hertzfeldt)

That trailer did nothing for me either, but after the Simpsons intro I'll watch anything he makes.

I remember reading something about this...I can't remember where, but the gist of it was that the fewer distinguishing features a drawing has, the more we project our own selves onto it.

So, if I see a drawing of a recognizable face, I just see someones face, but if I see a simple smiley-face, I see me.

Ah yes, that's the one! Thanks Greg Nog!

When I attended a screening of It's Such A Beautiful Day, Everything Will Be OK, and I Am So Proud Of You, I had a chance to ask Hertzfeldt about that - I observed that throughout his career his characters had gotten much simpler. He said that simplifying the faces and making them more abstract allowed for a wider range of expression than his more cartoony style would allow; he noticed that subtle differences in the placement of the features could convey vastly different emotions.
I also loved the way he played with the medium of film itself. His training is more as an experimental filmmaker than an animator, but animation was cheaper for him to make as a student. His admiration of artists like Len Lye and Stan Brakhage shows in some of the techniques he used for the trilogy; they enhance both the beauty of the films and the power of the narrative.

I would also like to note that despite all the quasi-smart-talking above, I made a complete weiner out of myself when I met him.

At last Halloween's half-marathon, a lady was dressed up as a banana. I was rather chagrined that she offered a blank look when I told her mah spuh-oon ihz too bihg.

It's not much of a trailer in a way, other than to say, this is a Don Hertzfeldt short, come see if it you like that sort of thing. Which I do, so ok. Effective.

I loved his early films, but hadn't kept up with him until seeing the feature version of It's Such a Beautiful Day. It's pretty amazing.

I hope the new film is good. It's Such a Beautiful day wasn't good. I made it through an initial 10 minutes having no information about the film at all before finding it myself. Hadn't thought about it since, then saw this post and wondered if this was that film, and it was, so I went and put it on. Not good, but I am happy for others who were moved by it.

Big Hertzfeldt fan. I've got prints, dvds, clips of the original 35mm and spent 6 damn years waiting for each installment of beautiful day.

cashman, did you watch the whole feature version of It's Such a Beautiful Day? IMO it's uneven - there are stronger and weaker parts, and parts where I was tempted to turn it off... so if you only saw 10 min's, it might be they happened to be some of the unrepresentatively weak parts. By the time it was done, I was glad I watched the whole thing.

Yep! But I'm just going to chalk it up as not meant for me.
