Trans 100 2015

The Trans 100 (pdf) is not an award ceremony. It is not a list of the “Best” or the “Most Important” trans people. It is not a popularity contest and there are many individuals absent from the list who are doing excellent work. More are no longer with us. To quote The Trans 100 Co-Founder Jen Richards, The Trans 100 “is an intentionally curated list of out trans people who are working on trans issues in the United States and having a positive impact.” posted by roomthreeseventeen (11 comments total) 14 users marked this as a favorite

I don't get this. The linked PDF specifically describes the list as "Celebrating Excellence within the Trans Community", and people are placed on the list only after being nominated; getting onto the list is a competitive process. How isn't it an award ceremony?

(That said, seems like a great list full of people worth researching.)

I'm so stoked Chelsea Poe is on it! She's been really outspoken about changing working conditions for trans sex workers and is so young and brave and inspirational. Also, I have a GIANT crush on her.

(If you go googling - she is not work safe!)

Oh, and I was so stoked when Myles Alexander Brady was announced as the new Transgender Outreach Coordinator at Howard Brown Health Center. Howard Brown does great work here in Chicago assisting those living with HIV and AIDS and providing gender affirming medical treatment. It's awesome that they have a trans person in charge of their trans outreach ("nothing for us without us"), and it's also nice to see a person of color in that leadership role.

Well... there's no ceremony. Or award.

From the Mission page:

"The Trans 100 celebrates excellence within the trans community. Our mission consists of two parts:
  1. Provide an overview of the breadth and diversity of work being done in, by, and for the transgender community across the United States.
  2. Act as a resource for the transgender community and our allies around the globe.
I agree, though - first impression is that it is very award-ceremony-ish (which is why I poked around!).

When the parents of trans prepubescents network in LA and Orange County, Dr. Johanna Olson is the doctor they refer to each other. Finding a fully trained and sympathetic doctor to work with these very young kids is a herculean feat. It's a shame she's not on this list.
