This "Cocktail" needed a little something...

"Cocktails & Dreams" on Youtube. My college girlfriend loved both the 1988 Tom Cruise vehicle "Cocktail" and cocktails too much, and in retrospect the first should have been a warning of the second. The people behind "Greenboy", all Mr. Show vets and other alt-comedy types, have taken on a new project - making "Cocktail" watchable. They shortened it to 10 minutes, and added Chris Fairbanks, Greenboy himself, to every scene. It's a funny testament to the power of technology to change history. Lenin would be proud. The picture of him in the French Foreign Legion outfit slayed me.

That was really well done. Thanks.

That was a lot of fun, although they kept making him smaller than Tom Cruise and that is very small indeed.

I'd never seen Greenboy before, and that was pretty great too. (This blooper clip in the previous thread gives you some idea of the gee-wiz high tech that these goofballs are working with.)

I'm kind of amazed Greenboy doesn't have more views. I mean, some of MY videos have more views than that!

That was HILARIOUS! Hard to believe they digitally stuck a new actor into a movie after the fact and made it work. And, it works so WELL. Many genuinely funny moments: falling down the stairs: cigarette in the eye, punching out Tom Cruise, and that art gallery scene is just too great. Hard to describe this thing it's so uniquely, weirdly funny. This needs to be a TV show! I've watched it multiple times and caught four easter eggs and counting...

Those interested in getting more of the amazing Chris Fairbanks in their lives should check out his excellent podcast with Karen Kilgariff (also amazing), Do You Need A Ride?

I keep trying to tell people this: Cocktail, the book, is a GREAT book. I strongly, strongly recommend it. I just about read it every year.

The movie, which differs quite a bit from the book of course, only takes place in about the first 50 pages of a 300+ page novel. It's dark, hilarious and a great look at NYC right when the 70s were giving over to the 80s.

You will read it and wonder how the fuck it was made into a Tom Cruise movie.
