I thought they didn't smoke marijuana in Muskogee.

I think there was a pretty large grass fire in Merle Haggard's tour van when he wrote that song, if you know what I mean.

A chord chart? Really? What kind of picker needs a chord chart for a song like that?

One who just learned the song, and has issues with short term memory retention?

A good session player who doesn't want to waste valuable recording time by fucking up the changes?

I thought they didn't smoke marijuana in Muskogee.

A few years ago, Stephen Colbert asked Merle Haggard about that line. Haggard thought about it for a moment and replied, "well, you know, I don't spend a lot of time in Muskogee..."

Enjoyed the tune. Good to see Willie and Merle still kicking it with such passion and enjoyment. The video needed a bag of Doritos on the engineering panel.

Every session player has played this chord progression since birth. It's pretty much the simplest progression possible.

A proper NNS chart is visible at one point. This is a pro session!

I hope to be having that much fun at that age. Relatedly, smoking that much weed would be okay too.

And studio time with the kind of players Willie and Merle use is totally free and there's no downside to screwing up. Forest, trees.

Yeah, I'll bet those session players aren't toking up - they wouldn't stay top-call players for long if they did...

Tragic to see two such promising careers derailed so early by the scourge that is the marijuana.

Damn. Now I want ice cream.

A national treasure.

The country singers are OK too.

Seriously, anyone who knows me on Mefi knows I worship both of these guys. Humbly, here's a an appreciation of Willie I recently wrote in another thread. (I once interviewed him at some length.)

Also the story behind Okie From Muskogee, as Merle related it, is that Roy Nichols remarked "I bet they don't smoke marijuana in Muskogee" as they passed the city limits sign, and after taking a hit on the joint Roy was passing, Merle thought "hey, that would make a great song." My favorite Merle quote of all time is that he says he wrote that song about "people who are easy to fool, like me."

There's something about gray haired old men getting wasted and singing that makes me happy. It makes me hopeful for America. The cynical side of me thinks that this is Willie doing product promotion for his private reserve brand of pot.
