Heaven Knows I’m Mexican Now: Morrissey's Latino connection goes live “I would hate to see a cheesy Mexican tribute to Morrissey,” he says. “I knew I had to use well-known Mexican artists” – among others, the group features underground icon Chetes, trumpet player Alex Escobar and Cafe Tacuba’s violinist Alejandro Flores – “and to mix it with electronic elements and other non-Mexican elements. To just play these songs with mariachi trumpets would be touristic – we didn’t want to come and dress in ponchos.”

Mexican musicians pay tribute to Morrissey and The Smiths with 'Mexrrissey' tour
"According to our sources [Morrissey] is aware. I don't know if he's going to attend any of the shows. We're not sure if he's going to like it, he might hate it. But I think that's what happens with him and fans of his music — people are very passionate. They might love it they might think it's sacrilegio [sacrilegious]."

It was a lyric about Reggie Kray that really stumped Camilo Lara. Translating Morrissey lyrics into Spanish had been proving tricky enough for the Mexican Institute of Sound DJ

It's easy if you just make up your lyrics with no relation to the original.

The three songs here are great! "Ask" is especially wonderful. Would love a full album.

Cafe Tacuba rock. My feelings about Morrissey are already well known.

I like the idea, but 'Ask' seems like they took the music from Los Fabulosos Cadillacs' Matador and diluted it. By the end I just wanted to listen to 'Matador'.

I'm seeing them on Wednesday so this is timely.

I love the idea, but feel there is too much OMD mixed into Everyday is like Sunday.

I've always said that the one thing I don't like about the smith's is Moz... So I've always enjoyed covers more than the originals and this is no exception.

Though the true language of the smiths will always be Ukrainian

Everything sounds better with a Ukrainian accent, even Katy Perry.

Morrissey likes Mexicans' hair, skin and teeth (usually).

So I saw these last night. They were basically amazing. I had a (slight) fear they'd be a one joke novelty with a welcome to be worn out by song four, but instead they were transformative and joyous. By the time Ceci Bastida sang International Play Girl I realised I had what could only be described as a dopey grin on my face. And I hate grinning, never mind dopily.

And yes TheWhiteSkull, they play Panico, and yes it is awesome.

If they put an album out I would dedicate my life to becoming a wedding DJ, just so I could drop El Hijo Soy/How Soon Is Now at the end of the night.

Really good gig. I have seen Morrissey on form and he's great, but given a choice between these guys and a sight unseen "will he play or not" current Morrissey gig, I might well choose to see Mexrrissey. They have great energy and enthusiasm for the songs and they really got the audience going.
