Rainy 4th World Ambient and Blaring Iridescent Pop

Two unique, evocative Japanese mixtapes to assure you that spring is really here at last: Spencer Doran's Fairlights, Mallets and Bamboo and Ventla's Astrocast 45.

Fairlights, Mallets and Bamboo: An investigation into fourth-world undercurrents in Japanese ambient and pop music, years 1980-1986, by Spencer Doran. You're a middle-aged salaryman residing in Akira's Neo-Tokyo and you've finally saved up the money for your vacation to the toxic rainforest.

Ventla's Astrocast 45 is a totally bonkers mix of over-the-top hyperactive covers of western pop music from the past fifty years. You're at a dayglo party on the edge of summer and the pool's so full nobody can move. (Ventla's previous MeFi appearance)

No problem! Any one who's digging the Fairlights mix would likely also enjoy the band Geinoh Yamashirogumi, who did the Akira soundtrack. A lot of their music would fit right in to that mix. I recommend their album Ecophony Gaia.

Oh, and I forgot to include this in the post: The tracklist for the Astrocast mix can be found on Ventla's tumblr.

i have no idea where i originally downloaded that Fairlights mix from, but it pops up on my iTunes now and then and i always have to walk over and see what it is. The Astrocast one is news to me and so far very welcome.

There's a second Fairlights mix also.

The first volume is one of my favourite mixes from the last few years.

Spencer makes music under the name (Visible) Cloaks. The Soundcloud is here:
which features a number of other mixes of obscure Japanese and 80s new age sounds. "Music Interiors" is thoroughly recommended.

I just noticed the link in the first post! My post is maybe a bit redundant but I guess this stuff deserves highlighting.

It's a bit late to mention this, but Ventla, creator of Astrocast 45, just released a new album on their label, and it's really good! For Human Consumption
