It's really a shame that this was left off of the Miyazaki Box. It's really moving. It's what you show people when they ask you why you're into anime. It's what you show at conventions and clubs to remind everyone what it's all about. It deserves to be preserved.

Weird seeing him do something so full on SFy in styling without throwing in a steampunk zeppelin or whatnot.

There's a Miyazaki documentary on Netfilx right now that is well worth a watch. Also it's got a cat in it.

My favorite bit.

It reminds me somewhat of Now and Then, Here and There.

Hayao Miyazaki's - On Your Mark "In 1994,

It's pretty striking that as Miyazaki was making this video the Aum death cult was planning a number of terror attacks in Japan.

It's really a shame that this was left off of the Miyazaki Box.

There is no way on earth this would have made it into the box set. Shigeaki Miyazaki (no relation) is one fucked-up dude, with mafia connections to boot.

I know all about the sordid revelations regarding Aska (it was really bad, even by American standards), and I know that the prevailing sensibilities would never have allowed the MV to be included. It's still a beautiful and moving marriage of music and animation that's worth keeping and sharing with others.

Maybe if the late, great GARO was still around...

IIRC, Aska was nabbed by the police about a year ago for possession of meth and MDMA (which the Japanese authorities regard as meth-by-another-name). His mistress was swept up into the scandal as well. (Please fill in the details if you're in the know about this).

In North American countries, we associate meth with unknown, low-level scofflaws like Jessie Pinkman, but meth use is de rigueur with some Japanese celebs, who are hung out to dry as example lessons by the authorities.

On the other end of the spectrum, some friends and I watched this a few years ago and our reaction was an intensifying chorus of "what. What. WHAT. WHAT!"s. (The lack of any apparent connection between music and animation contributed to this. Gorgeously drawn, yes, but after that is where we must part ways.

I loved this video - I saw it back in the midish- lateish 90's because I was friends with an anime enthusiast and she had got her hands on a copy (yes, there was internet back then).

It's such a beautiful piece - I do wish he would do that story.

(can't use the edit button for this :( ) - I wanted to add that I wonder what it would take to do a (good) fan creation of a full fledged movie from the piece? Some kind of kickstarter?

He also has deep connections to the mafia - people who run extortion rackets, engage in human trafficking, and generally are a cancer on society. For that reason alone Miyazaki (dba ASKA) is radioactive.

To be honest, while I like manga quite a bit, and have watched a fair amount of anime including all of the Ghibli output, I found this piece a little disturbing.

I'm a enthusiastic Studio Ghibli fan, and some time ago I saw a still of a winged girl and two dudes in a yellow convertible -- this one, maybe? -- among a collection of online images of Miyazaki's work. It bugged me that I couldn't identify which of his productions that image was from. Now I know.
