I wonder if he thinks he's real anymore.

I wonder if you really wonder that, or if he just thinks you do.

I'm such a babe in the woods, I've never heard of this guy. Until now. Shall I rejoice or curse you, Foci? MetaFilter: Motivational Epicenter

The ultimate irony is that most people watching these things are procrastinating.

James Franco trolled this with his lunatic potty training video, "Just Poo It". As usual LaBeouf is trying way too hard to be weird when it just comes naturally to others.

Ha ha, no. James Franco is the one who's trying way too hard in that equation.

The title even sort of matches the rhythm of the song. "(motivating epicenter) SHIA LABEOUF"

At least he didn't go with the obvious T-shirt choice.

Shia made eighty trazillion dollars grinding it out in a solid dozen good roles in good movies, and that was before Transformers 3 - More Confusing Robot Effects and Indiana Jones and the Nuked Fridge. At this point, he's rich, he's successful, he's going Jim Carrey. He's messing with Fame as an entity, because he can.

Then he goes and acts in Fury, proving he's worth his paycheck. And that The Weird is just an act to sell more tickets, and man, it's working, because you're thinking: Wow, he's weird to think that we'd think he was "weird."

He also supports small filmmakers.

Can't hate, gotta appreciate.

Yeah, and he rips off indie comic creators.

Actually, I can hate.

He's not that weird. Tom Cruise, that's weird.

There are quite a few other commercially successful artists who do their pet projects and support other art without trashing their own reputations the way that LaBeouf has. There's a weird little vein of self-loathing in his antics that's not fun to watch.

There's a pretty funny mistake there in Hitler's "bunker."

Eventually, as people’s sense of humour evolve, performance artists will succeed comedians as favourite popular tricksters. Marina Abramovitch, Andy Kaufman and Shia LaBeouf will be considered influential pioneers.

That entire affair reeks of Andy Kauffman. The plagiarized apology, the sky-written letter of apology... I'd be very surprised if Clowes wasn't in on it. (If for no other reason Hollywood tends to vet releases for blatant infringement. The tools are fairly well automated, and yes, include popular comic book scripts.)

Is there a Sunni LaBeouf?

I don't this so. Clowes doesn't seem like the performance art type. His work has often satirized pretentious stuff like that, particularly Art School Confidential. If anything, he seems like the unwitting and unwilling participant in whatever the hell LaBeouf thinks he's doing.

Also, I don't think Hollywood vets small films/personal projects in the same rigorous manner they would a feature production. If I recall correctly, LaBeouf's film wasn't being distributed, it just had an appearance at a film festival.
