Among the many other qualities that I've found to admire in the Evil Dead franchise, I have to say that the degree to which they've just disposed of continuity as being any kind of an issue is sort of refreshing. Like, there doesn't seem to be any sign here that "Army of Darkness" happened. I suppose they might bring him back to the present via some form of quick prelude, but I might actually like it better if they just don't explain it at all.

Sorry for the "Well, actually..." but: Army Of Darkness ends with him back in the present day. There's an alternate ending where he winds up in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, but the film as released has him at the S-Mart in the end.
posted by Ian A.T. at 10:08 PM on July 10, 2015 [5 favorites]

He got back to the present in Army of Darkness, though? Unless you mean the Director's Cut ending, but "canon," such as it is, is he came back. Thus the "But in my own way, I am king" monologue at the end.
posted by Ghostride The Whip at 10:08 PM on July 10, 2015

Ipsifendus, I take it you're referring to the alternate "slept too long" ending from AoD? In the normal theatrical cut, Ash is back in the present working at S-Mart. Which is where he's apparently been (at least career-tier wise) for the last 20-odd years. Which makes this show possibly the tightest continuity between Evil Dead installments ever.
posted by Strange Interlude at 10:09 PM on July 10, 2015 [1 favorite]

This article has more info on the show, including the cast other than Ash... yes, that is Lucy Lawless we get a glimpse of; she'll apparently be a rival monster hunter who blames Ash for the monsters.

Also worth noting is the fact that there will be ten half-hour episodes in the first season... so it will certainly be fast paced. (There also have been controversies at the Emmys about them automatically categorizing hour-long shows as Drama and half-hours as Comedy... it WILL be so cool to see this go up against Modern Family and Big Bang Theory)
posted by oneswellfoop at 10:18 PM on July 10, 2015 [6 favorites]

To be fair, pretty much everything usually is Ash's fault. He's kinda terrible at everything that isn't killing Deadites.

Well, it could be a ton-o-fun, but I don't see it as spiritual anything to the originals (ED, ED2, AoD).

Bruce is looking good, or at least the makeup is decent. He had fun in Burn Notice, looks like he's still having fun here.

Anyone else see Bubba Ho Tep? (Convinced a couple of friends to go with me [and drive] to a rando theatre in Seattle [from Vancouver] to see it; there were, like, 7 other people in the theatre with us. Good audience, though.)

Early last year I was walking around town (admittedly, a little baked) and saw Bruce Campbell sitting in front of a coffee shop with Ted Raimi. A few years back I had gotten to work with them on My Name Is Bruce, so I stopped to say hi, not expecting them to remember me, but Bruce was kind enough to give me the old, "Sure, sure. You're, uh...." line, when I told him I had worked on the movie. He told me that they were just spit-balling some story ideas. I didn't want to bug them, so I turned to Bruce and said that it was good to see him again, and then I turned to Ted and said, "Good to see you Sam... no Ted! No, Sam! Ted!" Like I said, I was a little stoned and admitted as much to them. They both laughed, and with a wolfish grin Bruce shook my hand and said, "You son of a bitch!" in the Bruce Campbell-iest way possible.

So, yeah, those guys are cool, and I hope Ash vs Evil Dead is a hit.

The Evil Dead remake was a good remake of the first movie, which was of course not funny at all, but actually a rather well-made horror movie.

Ash vs. Evil Dead seems like a promising continuation of the actual franchise, which has always been about increasing levels of silliness.

They are going the Fast and Furious route. Each subsequent entry has to be an order of magnitude more ridiculous than the last. I wholeheartedly approve of this, and wouLD be lying if I said this commercial (trailer?) didn't get me excited.

Also, Bubba Ho Tep was brilliant, as was My Name is Bruce, and more or less everything else he has done (fingers in ears, Cars 2 does not exist).

Ok, I'm sold. When I first heard of the show it had the smell of "let's make some quick cash". But after seeing the trailer I'll need to find a way to watch it.

I subscribed to Fangoria magazine before ED came out based on it's ED cover. I used my free ad that came with the subscription to plead for it to come to Houston. When it finally did a year or so later, I had to drive 45 minutes to the one theater that was showing it.

Years later, when the local Landmark theater was doing a midnight showing of Bubba Ho-tep with a signing and talk by Bruce Campbell beforehand, my boss and I bailed on work and sat in line all day. The only folks in front of us was a guy from Ain't It Cool News, Alex Winter's brother and his girlfriend. I met Joe Landsdale in the parking lot, became addicted to his books, Bruce signed my copy of his book and he gave a very amusing and interesting talk about his life and Hollywood.

And then the movie was great.

So yeah, I'm psyched.

Totally amazeballs! Although I am a little curious about how similar present-day Ash seems to has-been-actor-meta-Bruce in "My Name is Bruce Campbell," right down to having him living in what looks like the same trailer and acting like a vain doof with the corset-tightening moment.

Sam Raimi is officially on the record with this statement:

“My theory is that what the audience wants more than anything – more than a good story, more than an interesting visual or a good joke – is to see Bruce Campbell in pain. If Bruce Campbell is in pain then the audience is having a great time. I’ve read a few books of film criticism, and it all really boils down to that: the more pain, the more laughs.”

It's a pure, unforgiving aesthetic. If in the course of realizing it a bit of the distinction between actor and character goes by the wayside, that's the cost of perfection.

I kept thinking during the trailer, "This movie looks awesome!" I didn't realize until the end that it's going to be a TV series.

I'm worried that the show will have too much downtime. 10+ hours a season is a lot, and this is not a premise that can sustain character development, suspense, mystery, lore explanations, or other things that fill most longform serials. Evil Dead has to be frenetic. I want the show to be nothing but constant gore and wisecracks, like the trailer, but that's going to be hard to do in a TV series.

10+ hours a season is a lot

As oneswellfoop noted above, this is going to be somewhat unique (as far as movie-spinoff TV series go) in that each episode is only a half hour, so I'm expecting modern sitcom pacing rather than the kind in hourlong dramedies. A half hour allows it to be light enough to be fun, and the weekly break between eps will make it so they can indulge in a tiny bit of dramatic story-arcing episode-to-episode without it seeming ponderous.

Strongly Agreed. I did not realize upon first (very drunken view and post) that it was to be a television-format as opposed to a feature-length film.

BTW, just rewatched "My Name is Bruce" and it struck me that Bruce was very self depreciating in depicting the fictional Bruce Campbell as being impoverished; when the outdoor parts of the film was filmed on (one of?) his personal properties.

I now have no idea how well Campbell has been compensated throughout his career, but I'm now assuming that his financial management hasn't been pants.

Oh, but for a Phantasm TV show.
Every week it could just be draining unlieable teenagers blood from flying psychic orbs, or occasionally just teleporting them to the high-grav slavery dimension.

Bottle episodes could be middle-management meetings discussing the operational cost of running portals and keeping the gravity turned up so high.

How much land you own isn't a good indicator of wealth. For example, I could buy this 35 acre ranch for only 70 grand. Well, that's if I had 70 grand but still. For most people buying that much land is not really useful but if you have a job where you work sporadically as opposed to having a daily commute then that purchase might be worthwhile. Still, I hope that Bruce is filthy, filthy rich.
