Charly tries to say, "Listen."

Martinez says, "No, it doesn't work like that." To Volasgis he says, "Partner, give me the Taser."

Christ. No wonder cops shoot so many people. When it's acceptable to escalate and dominate to the exclusion of all else it's kind of amazing they don't shoot more.

Tasers: billed as an alternative to shooting people; actually used as an alternative to talking to them.

You have the right to remain silent, but you don't have the right to explain your situation. I could barely read this, the whole thing is sad.

I've been trying all afternoon to think of how to say what I want to say. I so rarely do it, but palomar showed me the error of my ways on the period tonight. It's for when you have so much to say you don't even know where to begin.

Homelessness is growing here in Los Angeles, but it's not the familiar form of the mentally ill and drug addicted who set up tents on the streets of Skid Row, out in front of the rescue missions with their paucity of beds. Tent cities are spring up in the river beds and under freeways, inhabited by people who used to live in the neighborhoods where they now camp. They watch out for one another, walk to visit friends and relatives, regroup after the city comes in and throws all their possessions into dumpsters. They do not want to live on Skid Row. Would you?
