Got Rhythm? Prove it as you try to keep the beat after it fades out (minimal sound content) in this web widget from the hotel (?) site that brought you last year's Superstar Vocal Range Chart.

801. Better than Jimmy Chamberlain, but nowhere near Matt Walker.

That is surprisingly hard, does it say anywhere what the scale is for the how much you miss? I average about 750 if I just try to tap the beat, but incorporating a little in-between pattern I managed 920 once.

I think it's measuring time between taps, I just got 720 by switching to the offbeat just after it faded out.

Where are the statistics??? What good is this if you don't get to see what percentile you're in?!?

I thought I was doing great until it threw a cymbal at my head.

Semi-off topic, but Mother 3 has a really great mechanic where you tap the rhythm of the battle music in order to do combos. Some of the songs are hard but I love rhythm games and I always thought it was a brilliant idea to throw it into an RPG. I can't wait for the game from Brian Chippendale of Lightning Bolt to come out, unless it already has.

From the info button on the top right:

How we calculate scores

The track plays at 120 beats per minute, which means a beat plays every 500 milliseconds. Your score represents how close you were to the correct timing.
If you're spot on, you get 50 points.
You will lose a point for every two milliseconds you were off by.
You will score no points if you're off by 100ms or more.
At the end, we add up all of your points, and that gives you your final score.

I get a much better score if I tap a small key, like a letter, that has little sideways motion. Spacebar gets me 801, h gets me 901.

I got 849.

I can't figure out how to get it to work. I have my volume turned all the way up and no music.

911, which means I either keep great time or I was doing so badly that it thought I should call for medical assistance...

875...I played in middle school.

I got 867. I've been playing the drums for 20 years, but I've never been all that great at keeping perfect time.

That's what the bass player is for.

Ah, finally got it to work on another computer. 810.

912, but I find the spring action on clicks and keys to be pretty inimical to actually accurately playing a rhythm. 😬

How we calculate scores: If, when the music returns you are within a gnat's crotchet of the original, we'll be awarding points.

I blame Rhythm Heaven.

I frikkin hate click tracks. I'm more of a natural drummer myself (i.e. I'm all over the place.)

Fun fact! Most of Sousa's marches are at 120 bpm, so hum 'Stars and Stripes Forever' and see if that helps.

(It got me from a 700 to like a 750, so not great but maybe it'll help someone else)

Fig, thanks, that got me up to 822.

My best score was 924 -- but that that was by tapping with my other hand in eighths on the desk to keep the time and hitting the keyboard on the quarters, hi-hat and snare style. I never got above 900 without using that crutch.
posted by chimaera at 6:47 PM on July 24, 2015 [1 favorite]

911 on the first try - which is surprising because even though I have a solid musical background rhythm was never my strong point. I do very frequently use a computer keyboard as MIDI input I wonder so I guess I have more practice with this than most people.
posted by atoxyl at 6:54 PM on July 24, 2015 [1 favorite]

Ore maybe it was a fluke - I haven't been able to top 900 or subsequent tries. Input device matters - I do much better with the keyboard than the mouse.

Um, 240... I guess I'm Steve Martin...

Was playing on touchscreen, got a 100 point boost (to 844) from switching from thumb to pointer finger. Best 882.

My best so far is 871. I will never be an MPC guru :(

I was consistently in the high 800s, but only once above 900, until I did what chimaera suggested and got my other hand involved (away from the keyboard). Then I hit 939.

I like to play opposite another drummer, though, and syncopate the beat. I flunked Rock Band miserably the one time I tried it.

This is too hard on a touch screen, as the pads of my fingers make no noise. I know I'm better than 726....

907 with the Sousa tip!

I got 841.

My "internal rhythm" when I make a track (at least in Renoise) tends to be 124-127. I can't be arsed to do the math, and considering that the measurement isn't a simple ratio (841/1000 isn't just 84.1 percent slower, since it's either fast/slow) and if I divide 120/127 it's about 94% - 96%, so my internal rhythm vs 120 bpm doesn't account for that.
