(Figuratively) METAL vs. (Literally) METAL

I got one that looked like a stylized infinity symbol. "Infinity" didn't work.

Narcaroth? Old Mars Child? Anaal Nathaniel? Four of France? Fuck it, I'll just be a robot.

They can't be actual ones, can they? I mean the first one I got was "Municipal Waste". While I would love - LOVE! - that some adolescent boys picked that for a name I'm just not seeing it.

TIL there is a thrash and death metal band named Dew-Scented.

Really, this just eliminates bots that do not have access to umlauts.

That makes me so happy! Bewildered, true, but happy.

They are all actual band names/logos.

Some of them are really, really tiny, thanks to so much extraneous art surrounding the letters. Too small for these old eyes to discern.

Proper captchas have an audio alternative for those with buggered eyes. These are, in general, even harder, as they tend to have some robotic voice whispering a word over louder robotic murmurings - it's all a bit like a seance for Turing machines.

In this case, then a short sample of "GAAAAH!" or "DEATH" or "SATAN" or "DECOMPOSE" screamed/grunted/yelled at top vol over heavily distorted guitars should suffice.

I had to make use of the skip. "MH" did not work for the one that was an M over an H on a shield and I had no correct guesses as to what band that was. I got 7 of the 9 I tried.

I really like that this is more than just recognizing letters, or at least that you can aid in recognizing letters by understanding how metal names are formed.

Anaal Nathaniel

Anaal Nathrakh, from the Charm of Making in Excalibur.

It's a bit wonky, and it does give false negatives.

I like the Internet Access CAPTCHA.

That's really pretty rad.

Confirming these are actual band names. Municipal Waste includes the mighty Dave Witte on drums; Anaal Nathrakh is vicious industrial black metal (here's a totally insane cover of the Specials Man at C&A); Old Man's Child is black metal; etc.

Nargaroth got me for a minute, and i didn't know what the pseudo-infinity symbol one stood for - some sort of prog metal? - oh wait, the Devin Townsend Project. Same with MH, which you'd have to know was Machine Head.

As Existential Dread points out, you'd have to know that stood for Machine Head. Remember, this is not a standard CAPTCHA for determining "Are you a human or a bot", this, as it says at the top of the page, is a CAPTCHA for determining "ARE YOU A METALHEAD OR A BOT?"

Metalhead here, these are all real bands. I got pretty much all of them even though most of these are bands I'm not really into and didn't recognize the logos of. I spent a lot of time staring at indecipherable CDs in the used bin when I was in high school, trying to figure out which thing I couldn't read I should buy....

Oh and one time Municipal Waste played in the parking lot of my building with Kylesa when I lived in Savannah. Good times.

[Appropriate username, btw] That's brilliant, but I can't work out whether - like Napalm Death - they've got their tongues firmly in their cheeks but are also totally genuine*, or are taking it all utterly seriously. I'd like to think the former, but the latter might actually make it even funnier.

*the best thing about Napalm Death is that they totally mean it, but are also completely aware of how ridiculous they may be thought to look by people whose musical tastes are, erm, more mainstream. See also: Lawnmower Deth.
