While I appreciate that you can have more literal interpretations of the lyrics with clips from the original series (especially in relation to playing pool, dancing, and drinking), and I also quite appreciate every single "Way to Eden" clip, I feel that the Animated Series version has a much tighter plotline, and the ludicrousness of the Animated Series lends itself more to the wonder and delight that is Shatner's version of "Common People".

Plus, was this directed by JJ Abrams or something, because, seriously, lensflare...

I find your lack of faith in Bubble Wrap disturbing.

Tik Tok yt

Argh.
That's a well edited clip.
But I am half tempted to hunt you down for sharing.

Unrelatedish: why the hell is there no Trek on TV?

Tik Tok is pretty much unbeatable in this field.

Why there's no more Trek on TV

tl;dr: Not enough money in it to make navigating the horrendous rights situation worthwhile.

I'll take the Kirk/Spock version. The new one lacks heart.

That album is serious underrated.

I have listened to Shatner's Has Been album more times that I care to admit. The album was released in 2002 with songs that he wrote and sang after his wife's untimely death. Common People is one of my favourite songs in the list, with It Hasn't Happened Yet about never being successful enough, Ideal Woman about dating again and the absolutely heartbreaking That's Me Trying about trying to reconnect with his daughter.

I swear, the Tik Tok video (which I saw because of MetaFilter) caused me, for the first time in my life, to think something along the lines of "oh, I see now how 'partying' is kind of a cool thing that it makes sense to have songs about" and then I ended up appreciating Ke$ha more than I had previously, not that "more than none" was a high bar to clear but I cleared it by a good margin. And then a few years later I almost got some elementary school teachers to lip sync to Die Young and in an alternate timeline that actually happened but it didn't quite in this one.

The greatest trick Ben Folds ever pulled was making a William Shatner album that didn't suck.

I enjoyed Common People, but yes, that is absolutely the reigning champion of TOS music videos. It's hard to see how that could be surpassed.
