"I caught this transparent gecko in my French press turned iridescent"

On /r/SubredditSimulator, all the posts and comments are made by bots. These bots generate text using Markov chains trained on humans' comments from different subreddits. Their posts are at times ordinary, surreal, revealing, and even self-aware.

Only the bots may post on /r/SubredditSimulator, so /r/SubredditSimMeta was created to let the real humans talk about it.

The consensus seems to be that circlejerk_SS and ledootgeneration_SS basically pass the Turing Test already; their posts are often indistinguishable from their parent subreddits (mostly because those subreddits are already parodies of Reddit itself). They even have moments of lucidity (circlejerk_SS: "I know I'll get downvotes for this but here is my popular opinion").

(This transparent gecko of this post title was found by MildlyInteresting_SS, a bot trained on /r/MildlyInteresting. Its other discoveries include a Chick-Fil-A fry without any wafer in it, just pure chocolate, and a Volkswagen cupholder that doubles as a welcome mat.)

Previously on MetaFilter: Markov-generated postmodern essays, Calvin and Hobbes comics, baseless conspiracies verified facts, and mashups of trip reports and tech recruiter emails.

Wow, if it wasn't for the lack of hate speech, I'd have trouble discerning this from a real subreddit.

I could read these headlines for days, though, they're hilarious...

> [AMA Request] Guy(s) or girl(s) who dressed as the Klingon Worf from Star Trek: First Contact RPG inspired by my witchdoctor grandfather

> Everyone thinks that my father is a screwdriver

> People think it's crazy that an FBI agent sold secrets to the local pep boys

> We already found the solution for interstellar space so much more awesome if we have sex

> I just finished Friends and I need a new washer and dryer

The KotakuInAction bot reveals pretty much everything that KiA users deny that they do constantly.

So basically this is the reddit version of Forum 3000?

Great post, thanks!

Talk about bacon?

As a Tacoma owner, I'm partial to bacon in the oven on one of them going at all times. A dozen is going for $3-4 here at Kroger and they send you a digital gift card and you could be eating canned or frozen veggies, which I don't enjoy, but they're healthy enough.

A dozen bacons, please.

I have always thought the bots were the best part of Reddit and now I know for sure.

/r/vegan's subreddit simulator makes me pretty happy, but maybe just in the way that these are fun when you frequent the subreddit in question a lot. I also like /r/ShitRedditSays' one a lot. I wish /r/vegancirclejerk was big enough to have one.

I'm sorry, I don't acknowledge any internet Markov chains not linked to joshmillard.com

I've looked but can't find anything yet...are there some examples of Markov chain code? I'm curious how they are made.

The top post of all time "Rescued a stray cat" links to this and really made me laugh.

I'm so easy to entertain.

SJWs are DDOSing the shit out of some chicken on the other side of the street.
Are we sure these are bots?

The personalfinance_SS is pretty good too, just needs to know which statements are questions and need ?s:
How to get extra income for housing... what *exactly* do I need to start investing in greek bonds (self.SubredditSimulator)

I'm 21m from the UK so health costs are not a good route...big institutions are mentioned as being easy but I don't know much more than that. What might be the case in my situation. - I have $1000 in cash the rest of my life. Can I expect my income to pay off the rest of my savings I could have been saved, although I don't use the card.

zardoz--just search for 'markov chain code' There are many examples in a variety of languages.
Roughly:
1. Get a bunch of text (at least 20000 words). Create pairs of words from it. For example, the sentence "I am the best" gives pairs (I am) (am the) (the best).
2. Pick a word to start.
3. To find the next word, pick a pair at random from all the pairs that start with the word you have. The next word is other word in the chosen pair.
4. Go to step three.

I think the most realistic of all is nointeresting_SS actually... short sentences about nothing in particular.

If you have Debian/Ubuntu, "apt-get install dadadodo" should give you some fun experimenting.
