Chuck Wendig, author of the new Star Wars novel Aftermath, has told fans who have objected to his inclusion of a gay character that “You’re not the good guys ... You’re the shitty, oppressive, totalitarian Empire.”

A franchise in which planetcide is committed, torture is a fact of life, children are executed by a serial killer and Jar Jar Binks exists is suddenly no longer child friendly because "teh gay."

I fear it will take another 12 episodes to really root out the Empire.

I agree with the critics, to be honest. The inclusion of a gay character has made this series no longer kid-friendly and I am appalled. I demand that the Star Wars universe be returned to the kid-friendliness it was always intended to have: constant maiming, cutting open pack animals to sleep in them and brief moments of sibling incest.

I work at a book store, and was recently asked to recommend a book for a "Star Wars fan". The person buying was already holding a book, but I suggested Aftermath because it was new (less chance the recipient already has it) and heavily discounted. I also tried to give a simple explanation about why this book counts in continuity terms (as opposed to the other book which fell under the Legends banner), figuring that is something a Star Wars fan might care about.

Only later did I learn that the buyer was looking for something to read to her seven-year old. And that she bought Aftermath on my recommendation.

I'm not likely to read this book but holy hell do I love Chuck Wendig. If you're not super into Star Wars or you balk at novelizations (two sentiments I can sympathize with), give his blog a whirl, or read the Blackbirds series, which is being turned into a TV show on Starz I believe. Good, good stuff.

I won't show my ten year old SW III because I don't think he's ready for the violence in it - Anakin killing the kids; force choking Padme; the burning of Ani. And then there's just the general poor story on top of that; I do want him to grow up with some taste.

A gay character? That would be an improvement!

This is weird for me for other reasons. I mean, you have people from different species marrying and banging each other. I don't really understand why having somebody gay would be so shocking or even surprising. I just can't get my mind around it. Don't some of the species not even have genders or whatevers? People's objections are weird sometimes.

I've read a lot of negative reviews of "Aftermath" and none of them mentioned a gay character. One they thing they all mentioned is that it's a shitty novel and Wendig should never have allowed to write in the Star Wars universe. Some of the choice review titles were: "Sad", Journey To Nowhere", "All hat no cattle" and "It's a trap!". So I'll definitely avoid this one but not because of a gay character.

I'm not an expert but I now they've had gay characters before in the extended universe although not exactly a major one...

They should just put some paper in an spin-off novel and watch the hardcore fandom loose their collective minds.

I tried reading it. I found the present-tense, casual writing style annoying. At times, I would have to stop and re-read sentences to make sure I understood them.

Combine the annoying writing style with the fact that the book focuses on a bunch of new characters that I care nothing about, and who supposedly aren't in the new movie, and I stopped about 1/3 of the way in. I returned the book.

Of course YMMV. I haven't read any of Wendig's other work, so I'm not sure if this is his general style or it was just this book.

I'm about 1/3 of the way through and have no complaints so far. I needed a light read after plowing through the latest Kim Stanley Robinson doorstop and it feels Star Warsy. The new characters are unique enough. I haven't read any of the previous Star Wars novels since the very first ones, but this one is definitely less dry than what I can remember.

I have to say my favourite Star Wars-related publication this year is Kieron Gillen's Darth Vader comic. Both Gillen and Jason Aaron on the main Star Wars comic have the dialog and tone down.

I actually think the linked article might be stretching the premise out of proportion. I just spent some time poking through the amazon reviews (starting with 1 star, and most helpful). Now there are 500 some reviews and I didn't go through all of them, but I did go through several.

To be honest, most people don't seem to like his writing (and there are consistent reviews like this on some of his other books from a few years ago). The few reviews that did mention a gay character actually stated that opposite. So here is one from the top current review (note that this reviewer did give 1 star review, hated the writing, but liked the inclusion of a gay character):

Before I dig into the bad, first a few nice words about the book and its author. Aftermath does add elements of diversity that Star Wars has been (for the most part) lacking. And it doesn't do so in an overtly political way. Some of the characters are simply gay, and that's that. They aren't romanticized or villainized for that fact. They simply are, and it adds a nice touch to a story that doesn't have nearly enough nice touches.

Other reviews were similar, but not going to link to them all, but I didn't find anything negative about the book because of the inclusion of a gay character - although they could be in the 500 reviews, and might be buried as unhelpful.

I actually wonder if the author just might have had a hard time with this book because there was attachment to the previous author and a book on a movie universe can't be all things to everyone (vs. writing for your own fans who love you on your blog and your subsequent books in your own writing universe).

So Hutts are hermaphroditic and as far as I can tell, they choose their gender expression and can and do change it over the course of their lives (e.g. upon becoming pregnant some but not all Hutts identify/present as 'female.')

So let's say a non-Hutt from a race where gender and sexuality work like they do with humans is only attracted to Hutts and only has relationships with Hutts. How is their sexual orientation determined?

Wait, a strange cult of Jedi in some sort of what appeared like a Roman Senator boy-man mentorship existed for the first 3 movies (before the possibility that female Jedi were ever even mentioned) and nobody thought that it was odd that Obi-Wan never seemed to have a love interest but instead spent his time parading around in search of
a young boy, boozing it up at as many cantinas as possible and using mind control to get away with whatever he wanted people to forget? Ya, you think it was his first rodeo when he said, "These aren't the droids you are looking for."

I'm about 100 pages in and so far it's pretty good. The writing is somewhat YA in feel, but at the same time it doesn't reek of the generic military-SF and/or misplaced Star Trek-y tone that popped up in most of the '90s SW Expanded Universe stuff I've read. So far, it focuses almost entirely on either wholly original characters or tertiary characters from the OT (think Ackbar or Mon Mothma), so don't go in expecting the further adventures of Han, Luke, and Leia, but the newbies are interesting enough and the details about the post-ROTJ universe seem well-thought-out. It reminds me a lot of the kinds of characters and scenarios that my friends and I would come up with for the old West End SW pen-and-paper RPG, which I think is also why I like what I've seen of both SW: Rebels and the upcoming Rogue One film.

Curiously enough, I just watched an episode of Clone Wars (which is actually rather good, even if you hate the prequels) where they retconned in a semi-ambiguous romantic relationship between Ziro and Sy Snootles. I still have no idea what this means with regards to Ziro's sexuality one way or another.

Yeah, but how much of that is still canon, at this point? I was under the impression about 95% of the non-film material is considered, at this point, "Legends" (a.k.a. "a different timeline/what-if scenario that we no longer recognize as ever having happened").

Aftermath is terrible.

It features lazy, predictable plotting; characters with identical voices; and a case-study-worthy terrible choice of present-tense narration. It's also a perfect example of how sentence fragments should be used in moderation.

Oh, and Chuck tells you the name and species of every goddamn character. Even background extras.

Ugh.

My sons are 6 and 13. My older son liked the movies (all 6 of them) but never ever really got into Star Wars like I did when I was a kid. He did ask for and get some of the Lego sets.

Our younger son is just at the age when Star Wars might capture his interest, but we shall see.

There's just so much out there now competing with Star Wars these days. My younger son, for example, is totally into Marvel Super Heroes.

Probably part of it is that I'm at best ambivalent towards Star Wars. The prequels were complete garbage and didn't really resonate with me, and I'm pretty sick of Star Wars, even though it was the first movie I ever saw in the theater (this was pre-VHS, even) back in 1977.

So we're not really a "Star Wars family."

The new movie looks cool, although I was kinda hoping for new ships. The X-Wings are all recycled...

I would like to just copy and paste this into every discussion with family members or random assholes that feel the need to bitch about some character being anything other than a white dude. Cause seriously, how is it the 21st fucking century and we are still hung up on these kids of things? Rue was black, Thor can be a girl, and Dumbledore was gay.
