The heroes of Mad Max and disability

Our hero, one of the few surviving, is someone like me. An individual who you’d think would be the first gone — not last surviving — due to physical disability. Here was a game presenting Max and saying "He survives." The subtle message, vital message that goes unsaid is the next part: "And so can you".
Tauriq Moosa at Polygon writes about representation of physical disability in the new Mad Max video game.

I was just looking at this last night! And by 'looking at it' I mean I went OOH AWESOME, opened a new tab, and didn't get around to reading it.

There's been a lot of talk/praise on tumblr re: Furiosa's prosthetic and how awesome she is as a figure with a physical disability but I haven't seen much about and probably would have never noticed Max's leg brace.

This is really touching, especially this (from a linked article):
"Watching Fury Road, I felt like I was watching my own struggle brought to life (albeit in a very fantastical setting), and I don’t think I ever realized how truly profound that could be for me."

And the cosplays coming out of this are SO COOL

Thanks for the motivation to actually read this. I'm not super knowledgeable about gaming news sites but I've started watching Polygon recently and I'm really happy with what's coming out of it.

I like this one too.

Oh my god, that is amazing. If every single person who sees that doesn't point and yell "WITNESS!" it will be a sign that we have failed as a culture.

WITNESS HIM!

By my deeds I honor him. V8. *makes V8 sign with fingers of each hand crossed against each other*

This is the shot my girlfriend got of him when we saw him.

It bears repeating that George Miller, who has directed or co-directed all of the Mad Max movies and is the major creative vision behind that world, is a physician. (He's sometimes referred to as "Dr. George Miller.") He raised part of the budget for the original working emergency calls. Byron Kennedy, the producer, was his ambulance driver.

And I think that definitely informs the Mad Max world. You get people like Quentin Kenihan, who's a disability rights activist, popping up in the cast of Fury Road.

I highly recommend checking out Miller's one venture into straight drama, Lorenzo's Oil. It's about two parents trying to find a treatment for their son's rare neurological disorder.
