This, along with Presurfer and Null Device, were some of my top bookmarks for a time, and all of them led me to Metafilter.

This is the first I am seeing of this masterpiece. I feel like a great void in my life, that I never knew existed, has now been filled.

Direct link to the HURFY DERFDAY TO US! post on Blort, for posterity.

This, along with Presurfer and Null Device, were some of my top bookmarks for a time, and all of them led me to Metafilter.

Presurfer also celebrated their 15 year mark recently, and it's still going strong. I'm not familiar with Null Device, and there are too many "null device blogs" to be sure which is whic.

Hey, does Blort have an RSS feed? #14 of the things I miss about Google Reader GODDAM IT IM STILL MAD is how it could infallibly find the feed in any web page no matter how hidden.

Awww, thanks for the nice post, not_on_display, what fun to be on the blue, wheeeeee!!! And thanks for all the nice in-thread hurfs and durfs, guys. Good thing I swept the sawfly larvae off the front screen before we got visitors.

Here's the scoop: this is still quonsar's roll-your-own handcrafted labor-of-love code without any of the fancy geegaws in the packaged blogs - like RSS, ahem. It's quirky how we like it. Somebody has to keep it going old school.

I stumbled on the site sometime in 2000 or 2001 and was smitten by the weirdness. I sent quonsar a link about Maine's Miss Potato Blossom queen and here we are 15 years later. He and I have been pals since although we've never met irl. He's a sweetie.

He was always talking about mefi and sharing threads and then after awhile, I joined too. So here we are, older and none the wiser.

Presurfer also celebrated their 15 year mark recently
Interestingly, two of blogdom's most entertainingly crazy linkbloggers made their first post on the EXACT SAME DAY. Making the 24th of September a lot more than the usually 2nd day of Autumn and Libra.

As for RSS, I used one of those RSScreator thingys* to pull the Blort into my reader which it does when it updates a Weekly header.

*not going to say which one because I don't necessarily recommend it, and haven't researched enough to see if there's something better

These Olde-Fashioneded Blogges are making me feel young again. It's like Web 2.0, Facebook, smartphones and Google never happened.

it's unwieldy in many ways - when i defined the db tables i had no idea what RSS even was. it's like only partly dynamic - posts get stuffed into the db, then a static page is generated. the static pages are what you see. after 7 days the page is archived and a new front page is generated. posts are pretty much freeform, with only a few rigid fields specified. i never thought it would go on this long, but juju became a rabid fan and eventually the primary curator and has never lost enthusiasm. a couple of years ago i migrated from postgres to mysql, that was a real chore! a year or so ago a php update broke it badly (a good thing since it was using all these deprecated GET/POST methods which allowed it to be hacked several times) and that took some real doing to iron out. a while back i was looking at moving it all into wordpress but with the freeform post data it would have been a huge, and largely manual task to parse it all into proper form. ugh! juju has wanted an RSS feed for years but I just don't see an easy path to get there. thanks for the post!!!!

That would be the blog of Metafilter's own acb.

So much love for the Blort and those who have been bringing it to us for all these years! I often go for long periods without checking in and then have a Blort Binge and then everything seems weird for a while. Some of my all-time favorite things online, I found through Everlasting Blort. Thanks for exposing me to all the blorty goodness!

Cue I remember when

Dave winer talked about whose it was, and then RSS 2.0 came and Atom. I was just a n00b then in the blogosphere.

I'm so all about RSS that it was necessary to put the Blort in my reader and let it let the title wear its timeout icon. That reminds me to fire up the browser and visit twice a week.

Everlasting Blort was my first experience with masterfully curated strange. It remains an example of excellence of content.

Thank you, Quonsar (II, etc) and Madame Jujujive.

Respect

Callooh! Callay! For madam jjj! Someone bought me a (mini) iPad, thus these days I can check the Blort every morning before I even get out of bed. This has done a lot for a) warping my mind and b) destroying my productivity. So those are two good things.

We can even sing 'Happy Birthday' to the site now for free. Another good thing.
