"You're Sherlock Holmes; Wear the damn hat. "

Wow, this looks ten times better than I was expecting! I'll have to rewatch it a few times with a clearer head to see if we have any clues as to which bits of canon they're adapting. Can't wait to see this.

It looks like we get more Amanda Abbington in this. Which is fantastic.

I really don't know about the hat. The joke was good in the modern era, but for Victorian London, he should have some other sort of hat. Probably a small top hat. Watson should have a bowler.

Is it me, or is Martin Freeman using a more "proper" accent for Watson in this than in the standard series?

I will never stop loving the fact any two words, literally any two words that are (1) longer than three syllables, where (2) the first one starts with a B, and (3) the second one with a hard C, will correctly identify Benedict Cumberbatch.

This is a trailer for a special Christmas episode of Sherlock. It will suspend the show's modern continuity for a one-off story set in the 1880s.

Sharp trailer. The shot of Baker Street from above (crowded, carriages) looks very suspiciously like a nod to the opening titles of the Jeremy Brett series.

Definitely looks like it. Not one of Holmes' more successful cases...

Funny how I'm way more interested in this than seeing much more of the modern series. Cumberbatch is trying really hard (and succeeding!) to be Brett in some of those shots.

Why not split the difference and have it take place in the Edwardian era? Then you can have a Downton Abbey crossover to get the big American Anglophile TV donor dollars for PBS.

Yeah. Putting these guys in Victorian London reduces it to just one of a hundred Sherlock Holmes adaptations. On the other hand, it couldn't be worse than the last se[ason|ries].

Maybe if he were born in the U.S.ofA. instead of London, that might apply.

As for renamings, to me, the simpler the better, so I go for Benadryl Cummerbund, also for the appropriate references to a sleep-inducing drug and an obsolete, overly-formal piece of dress.

We need to do more with other actors with borderline-silly names, like Leonardo DiCaprio (Guylombardo DeCapandtrade) or Ving Rhames (Bing Rhymes... why isn't he doing Microsoft commercials?) or Joaquin Phoenix (Wallclean Albuquerque) or Cobie Smulders (Doobie's Mothers) or even the Avengers' Asgard brothers, Hemsworth (Phlegmhurt) and Hiddleston (Fiddlestone).

Even Shia LaBoeuf (Shyboy LaBoop) is under-renamed compared to Ben.

I do also rather feel that this is an odd thing because THE MODERN-DAY SETTING IS KIND OF THE POINT.

But against that: I would say that this version is also defined by its Holmes and Watson. Their characterization, the interplay between them, the performances by the actors. And presumably those attributes do carry back into the special's setting.

You have many fellow travelers on that road. (I'm not one of them but the number of people driven to irrational rage by the mere mention of Moffat's name boggles and annoys me. I've had to tumblr savior it for my own sanity.)

My hope as someone who's been up and down on Sherlock is that the change of temporal scenery, like the change of lead in Who, leads to some positive changes in the writing and plotting.

They should leave the continuity suspended permanently and just set every episode in a different time period. Sherlock 1980 with two-tone pork pie hat. Sherlock 2080 with anti-Psycoborg neural diffusion visor. Sherlock 880 with Sutton Hoo helmet.

any clues as to which bits of canon they're adapting.

I remember reading awhile ago about them adapting The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle for this special, but it would have to be a very loose adaptation if that's what they're going for.

The pointy hoods glimpsed at 0:34 and 0:58 evoke "The Five Orange Pips."

They sort of worked in the five pips during the Great Game, but it was more of a passing reference, and I agree that it seems like it would fit based on this trailer.

Personally, I'm excited and I WANT IT NOW, but I'm a complete, unabashed BBC Sherlock fangirl. I do agree that the modern setting is one of the things that really sets apart the current series, but I don't think that's the only thing. I feel like Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch play off of each other really well. I also really enjoy the humor that they bring to it.

At the same time, I don't think it would work if they took the exact modern day BBC Sherlock version of Holmes and Watson and just transported them back to the original Sherlock Holmes era, but based on the trailer it seems like they're adjusting their portrayals for the time period, which will make it much more interesting. I really like seeing this slightly more restrained version of Benedict's Holmes.

(I feel like we're on a first name basis now that I had a ten second conversation with him when he signed my program after Hamlet. And in case you were wondering, he was so nice and self deprecating and it was one of the best moments of my life.)

Is there a release date yet? It doesn't seem like it. I want to be able to mark it in my calendar and count down the days.

What can I say, having a nearly two year wait just to get a single 1.5 hour episode makes the whole Sherlock fandom a little rabid.

I think it could work.

No you don't understand, it'd be totally different from Dr Who because Sherlock has a sort of disdainful affection for humans and dresses eccentrically, also his nemesis is a kind of mirror version of himself that has all the same powers but uses them for evil.

I am really over the "make fun of Benedict Cumberbatch's name" meme, given that he's gone on record talking about how he was bullied as a kid.

If ever there was a character that called for an actor who had the air of having been bullied at school then Sherlock Holmes has to be a good fit.

I will never stop loving the fact any two words, literally any two words that are (1) longer than three syllables, where (2) the first one starts with a B, and (3) the second one with a hard C, will correctly identify Benedict Cumberbatch.

As good as Cumberbatch is in the titular role, Martin Freeman is the secret sauce that makes this version of Sherlock Holmes work for me. It's funny- all the things I can't stand about Moffat WRT to Doctor Who (the "specialness" of the Companion and how The Doctor needs her, etc) are the elements I like most about Moffat's Sherlock Holmes.

We are dangerously close to "pear pimples for hairy fishnuts". On second thought, it might be just me that's taking that tangent.

I've got Moffat issues as well but the chemistry of the Sherlock cast overcomes that (Cumberbatch vs. Gatiss are almost as compelling as Cumberbatch and Freeman). But try as I might I cannot get into Doctor Who.
